Big Ten Basketball 2020-21 Discussion (Part 2)

Chicago is more akin to the Capitol of the Midwest than anything in common with downstate Illinois.

He was a bright spot for them and and an underclassman. That roster is quickly getting ugly

Yeah the SEC has tons of cash and is totally fine spending it to improve their programs. Bama and Arkansas got two of the hot young coaches that are cutting edge play style wise. A&M hired a proven high level coach. Even UGA did even though Crean has been bad so far.

Meanwhile Minnesota hired a BE assistant coach. Even PSU hired a B1G assistant although I like his background much more than the Minnesota hire

I don’t know if I would go that far. I guess you would have to look at age of coach, achievements etc… For instance the ACC has 4 coaches that have won a national title-Coach K, Roy, Boeheim and Bennett. A few of them are probably near the end but Bennett is a top 5 coach in the game maybe even better. Larranaga has been to a Final Four. Hamilton has FSU rolling now. Then include a team like Louisville. Mack has probably gotten the proverbial short stick had a real good team last year and the possibility of a big run. This year covid hit them a couple times and killing any hope of the tournament.

The best coach in the B1G?? Izzo. I wouldn’t take Izzo over K/Roy/Bennett. The B1G really needs another coach to make a Final Four eg… Painter/Holtmann/Howard(still early)

It’s worth it if you get him.

So for Indiana, no, it’s not worth it.

Exactly. Well said

I’m a Minnesota Vikings fan. (I know, leave me alone) I remember one year with Mike Tice as our coach we lost in the last Divisional playoff game of the weekend to Philadelphia. In his press conference Tice talked about how the Vikings technically “finished fifth” and were “one of the last 5 teams playing.” I’m paraphrasing there but it was ridiculous. With that being said, I think Turgeon should absolutely be bragging about his his team made the “Final 18!”

Only if you’re black. The world continues to suck in some respects.

Yeah, they rode that kid mercilessly!

Every conference has head scratchers of course, but I believe the ACC has better coaching depth than the Big Ten and I think the Big 12 is at least on par with the Big Ten, with less teams.

Again, Izzo, Painter, and Howard are the best three in the Big Ten and Juwan is only in year two, so still has to prove he has longevity. I don’t think anyone in the next tier (Underwood, Holtmann, Turgeon, Pikiell, McCaffery) have proven any better then the mid-tier coaches in other leagues. Maybe the Minnesota and PSU hires turn out better than I think, but they just seem boring and uninspired.

Doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things, as long as Juwan has Michigan rolling I am good, but another batch of early flameouts for Big Ten teams has me pessimistic about the state of league coaching.

I honestly wish, and I know this isn’t the world we live in, but I wish these cowardly, racist little twits (oh, there are some other words I wanted to use!) would have the courage, rather than hiding behind their phones or computers, to say what they have to say to E.J.'s and Kofi’s face! :face_with_symbols_over_mouth:

I prefer PSU’s new hire over Minnesota. Minnesota was baffling but at least PSU has a coach with good credentials.

Illinois was able to land Ayo and Miller but word is Antigua was the one who made it possible for Illini to land Chicago area recruits.

Yes exactly. Shrewsberry has some real pedigree. Under Stevens at Boston then Painter at Purdue. The problem is PSU is an awful job with limited resources relative to the conference and probably the worst fan support. So gonna be tough sledding.

Meanwhile the Minnesota guy got the job strictly because he’s from Minneapolis and that he can theoretically recruit the guys from Minnesota. Even though he was an assistant there and couldn’t get them then. Which seems like a less than great idea.

Shrewsberry knows X’s and O’s so it would mitigate some of the talent issue that he’ll face at PSU. Purdue fans were sad to see Shrewsberry leave Purdue which says a lot about his coaching acumen. Maybe, he’ll be a HR hire for PSU.

Minnesota is a good school. Cold there, but if I look around the league at places that COULD be fielding perennially strong hoop and football squads, Minny strikes me as the best candidate. I also think that if Northwestern got the right coach with good Chi connections, that school could be a great regular upstart thorn in everyone’s side. Would mean defying the too-easy narrative that the school’s academic requirements are the problem. . .

Looking around the league, I don’t see that many other schools so ripe for improvement. MD and Rutgers. . .

Ranging a little in our commentary here, but I always regret it when a Black coach is hired who pretty obviously isn’t going to succeed. Ends up being a disservice. Hope Ben Johnson will surprise.

Yeah Minnesota should be a much better program than they are. Not sure how good most of their nonrevenue sports are, but football has never been very consistently decent. I know their women’s volleyball is good. But they get really good fan support and have local talent. But then you look at their history and it’s just not very impressive at all.

Maybe there’s only room for one of Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin to be consistently good? If you’re ranking which programs have the most going for them those 3 are probably fairly similar but below IU/MSU/UM/ILL/OSU/PU/MD. UW has been able to elevate itself because of an incredible coaching pipeline from Bennett to Ryan. Because before that they were a B1G bottom dweller

Wisconsin found a formula that works for them to mitigate the lack of talent. They pretty much recruit the same type of player to fit their system and they’re usually a 4 year player which helps them down the road.

Iowa wasn’t ever going to get elite recruits so they found players who can shoot but are lacking in athleticism and that’s Fran’s moneyball approach to building the program.

Minnesota should be a sleeping giant because Minneapolis is starting to become a fertile recruiting ground yet they couldn’t land Jalen Suggs and Chet Holmgren. Both are hometown recruits which is bad.
