Big Ten Basketball 2020-21 Discussion (Part 2)

He sounds like he’s fighting for a job nobody thinks is at risk…

Porter Moser is going to be busy next year coaching both IU and Maryland.

Another terrible look from some moronic “fans” of a B1G school. As much as I rooted against OSU/Illinois this year, none of these kids deserve anything close to this. Be so much better people.

Lol, yes. Spot on.

everybody shooting for that Final 32

He didn’t even stick to the alliterative theme of the rounds. If we’re just inventing terms here maybe have some fun. How about Thorough Thirty-Two? Thankful Thirty-Two? Thought-Provoking Thirty-Two?

Wow. Poor Thad.

Yeah, Pikiell has a case, but it gets tough because their situations aren’t the same. I mean Rutgers was absolutely terrible when he took over, but his best conference record is only 11 - 9. Vs someone like Turgeon seems to perpetually underachieve but has won a Big Ten title and five of his seven seasons he has better Big Ten records than 11 - 9. Tough to measure situation vs. coaching ability, where is Pikiell’s ceiling, can he ever win the Big Ten regular season at Rutgers?

But I agree with your first sentence, I do not think the Big Ten has a strong roster of coaches, and I don’t think this round of the coaching changes is going to improve it. Oh well, at least Michigan has one of the good ones.

This is part of why the Illini have not recruited Chicago well recently. Downstate Illinois is the opposite of diverse

Michigan should look at him but a lot of schools will

Weird guys strike again.

Turgeon should bring up roster construction with the guy who handles Maryland recruiting.

A little too real. He made similar comments after we pantsed them in A2. I’m sure his players love to hear how they’re just not up to the job but doing well in spite of it? Don’t think we’ll ever hear that from Coach Howard.

He’s sub-tweeting Maryland’s Under Armor representative

I think the Big Ten has possibly the best group of coaches of any conference in the country. Are they all perfect? Of course not. But go look around elsewhere and you will find some real head scratchers also.

I don’t know. Surprisingly, the SEC has some really impressive coaches now. It’s a worse league for sure, but I think there’s a lot of coaching talent there (or at least a lot of really good recruiters). Calipari, Musselman, Oats, Pearl, Buzz Williams, Rick Barnes, Tom Crean, Frank Martin, Cuonzo Martin, Wade ($$), Mike White. I don’t love all of them, but most have had more success than a lot of the Big Ten coaches once you move past the top of the league.

This conversation has been ongoing here for a while! After this tourney, I return to wondering more about the style of play than about coaching quality. Also–as in the convo about the bagman and the SEC–how much money clouds the national picture, muddies the water when we look at academics, etc.

Apparently if you’re a Big Ten center and play well in a losing effort in the tournament, fans go after you?

Why would someone even be mad at Cockburn? He was their best player easily against Loyola. Even made his FTs.

Liddell. . . much the same, though he had some late-game lapses.

Someone on the radio with Sam Webb made a good point that this stuff will get worse as there’s more gambling on games and if players get more compensation for their labor. (“You’re getting paid and this is how you play?”)
