2024 Olympic Basketball

They still really really need a guard or two to hit but yeah France has an exciting national team future.

They’re almost certain to have the best player in the world for 5-10 years.

It just really hurts to see Wemby stand outside the arc all game

That has to be Traore, right?

Hey maybe it’ll be Wemby

France’s 4 guards combined for 2 assists and 3 turnovers.

I’m not saying he’s Paul George.

I’m just saying we’ve all followed his career, and he’s quite clearly a way better player than his TS%. There’s significant substance to his game and he’s an incredibly rewarding player to watch closely.

Easily one of my favorite U-M players to watch since running the site.

He obviously isn’t a great 3-point shooter and had an awful stretch this year, but reducing him to “average TS% average usage” to say he’s merely average-ish just seems disingenuous for a 22-year-old who does so much on the court.

If his usage/TS% is the stock price, he’s pretty clearly a buy for me.

Also…Paul George is really really good! So what if he’s not Paul George?

Franz is the best Big Ten player in the NBA, right? Or am I forgetting someone obvious? JJJ probably up there

yeah, JJJ is better

I’m as big a fan as anyone of Franz but he’s not yet incredible in the NBA. That’s the extent of the claim. Nobody thinks he’s that guy at this point in his career.

And no his defense hasn’t been insanely good either. The TS% is just an easy way to to make it clear that he’s not an All Star.

This isn’t some bold claim.

Lifetime achievement and still playing might not be elected to the HOF but has a good case Mike Conley Jr.

Also in that category Draymond Green.

OG Anunoby???

Don’t forget Big Ten legends like Evan Mobley and Jrue Holiday.

By his “career”, you mean the years where he would have been a junior and senior in college? What was the trajectory from year 1 to year 2? What do we expect going forward?

How does Franz compare to his draft class?

Pretty well. Still not sure I would take him over Cade or Barnes. Arguably Sengun is the best of that group.

I think Mobley is probably generally more valuable than Franz too, due to defense

The whole thing we started with is “Franz is just that good and that’s why Germany is rocking France”. My retort was “that doesn’t seem like the best explanation given how good Franz is in the NBA and the rest of the context of these two teams”.

What he will be isn’t relevant. What is relevant is exactly how good he is now. Guys that are that good now usually have stats that suggest they’re very good and cause commentators to say “wow you’re very good”. He’s a bit above NBA average. That’s great for his age.

You also said he’s an average nba player. I’m not suggesting you extrapolate multiple years, but he’s presumably better now than he was during his second season, which is better than his first season.

I said he’s currently a bit above average. His TS% was a tick below league average. His BPM went from 0 to 1. Same w his DARKO. There wasn’t some huge leap this year. He had some very significant struggles in the playoffs that didn’t scream “guy in the middle of making an enormous leap”.
