2024 Olympic Basketball

He’s more on the bench visibly swearing

I hear the “FIBA game is different” but is there any suitable explanation for Dennis Schroeder being THIS freaking good in international play, like a legit surgical operator who’s cooking anybody in front of him, when he can barely hang onto minutes in the NBA?

Like he is ridiculously good rn

part of it is that france has worse guard play than 2023/2024 michigan

It’s not just this game though. It’s any time he has the German uniform on

I mean, if you are building a team for a tournament I just don’t think someone like Gobert is a super useful spot to have a “good pro”? So even if he’s good, I’m not sure he’s that valuable.

You’d much rather have a PG, and you’d much rather not have guys who are in their mid-30s.

Obviously, Wemby is awesome, but there’s not a ton else on there and he doesn’t have many FIBA caps does he?

Yeah, I mean - obviouly FIBA is by and large a lower level of competition.

I think the fact that this is basically this German group’s 3rd major tournament together in 3 years REALLY helps them.

They’re so good together . . . To a man everyone in the rotation is very useful in their role

FIBA game is different, but also how many countries have NBA starters at PG?

Even if you aren’t one of the best starters in the NBA, DS has averaged double figure points in the NBA for like a decade in a row?

Gobert is especially bad against stretch 5s bc duh. I think under most circumstances you’d be very happy to have him though.

The French can’t make anything he does well work well and I don’t think he’s playing especially hard.

The same is pretty much true about Wemby.

No you’re right - I guess what I’m saying is that France has more top-level talent, but it fits worse and also leaves a cavernous obvious weak-spot. The fact that German’s best players maybe aren’t as good is made up for the fact that their 3 best guys do different things and fill 2 of the most important archtypes (PG, 2 way wing)

France has 2 centers and a 3(ish)-D wing

Franz is really showing out in the Olympics and what he could become in the NBA (he’s close now). What’s helping him now is Germany’s offense is more functional than the Magic’s. FIBA Shroeder and Outz are better for Franz than Orlando’s backcourt of Suggs and random 2-guard (Gary Harris?)

Yeah it’s this. Guys that are completely common in the NBA are not actually common once you’re cutting it up by country. Coby White would start on every team that isn’t Team USA.

I think we need to acknowlege that a large part of the Magic’s offensive woes, and a large part of what is preventing Franz from being an all-star, is his inability to make 3’s.

He’s a good player, but part of that teams offensive shortcoming is Franz’s Offensive shortcoming.

It’s that whole team’s shortcoming bc Magic Draft Philosophy

Things turned quite well for US. Get Brazil in QF and Germany is on the other side of the bracket. Every other QF game should be really fun. Greece, Aussies, Canada, Germany, Serbia, France

Yeah, Franz has been able to grow into this. He was sort of figuring it out a few years back at EuroBasket.

Wemby isn’t there yet at all. France being good will come down to whether Traore is the real deal IMO.

France has a ton of youth talent right now.

I don’t knwo that you need an NBA pg. The two guys France are moving through the spot are a 4th guard on a good french team, and a low-tier starter on an ok Spanish team. It’s not as much “they lack an NBA guard” as “they lack a decent European guard”.

We saw how effective, like, Lorenzo Brown was when he was healthy in this format.

Aleksa Avramovic on Serbia is a good European player, Thomas Walkup is a REALLY good European player.

France is loaded with toolsy wings that have no idea what they’re doing at younger levels

maybe if some of them figure it out?

Yeah, if you think about 2028 then the fact that they are probably going to have like 8-9 draft picks over two years seems notable.

Traore, Essengue, Perrin, Risacher, Srrr, Salaun, Pacome, Ajinca.

Traore/Wemby with multiple pros in between them seems fun.

Tidjane Salaun, Pacome Dadiet, too, yeah
