2022 NBA Draft Discussion

Right, if the Pistons are out of top 4-5, I can consider Sharpe in the 5-7 range.

Sharpe athleticism is theoretical while Ivey has proven in D1 competition plus Ivey is considered to be an elite athlete so it’s hard to top it.

What does it matter if he sat out a year? Jamarr Chase sat out a year. Almost every minor league baseball player did in 2020. If he has elite talent, that’s all that matters. All it means is that amateur draft evaluators like us are in the dark.

Yeah in the grand scheme I didn’t think Sharpe’s decision at UK is going to matter at all.

Why? You are drafting him for many years. Doesn’t matter if he’s rusty.

Because it’s the unknown factor where you pretty much have known quantities from other prospects. You don’t know how Sharpe can play against a much bigger jump from HS to not playing a year to NBA. Yes, I know you draft long term but for the Pistons, I rather not gamble because you need to find a 2nd star to go with Cade.

It’s not rustiness that I’m worried about. It’s not being able to evaluate against D1 players which would reduce the risk of drafting a bust. Sharpe is clearly a talented player but I’m letting someone else gamble on him at top 4 if they liked him a lot.

Jamarr Chase has elite tape in the SEC. Sharpe only has HS tape to go off by and he hasn’t played in a year. It’s too much of an unknown factor for Sharpe for me to gamble on him to be picking him over Ivey at 4. To compare both are apple to orange IMO

That’s fine if you want to drop him on your own personal big board, because you have limited information compared to NBA GMs who can get much closer to him. For you it’s a gamble, for Troy Weaver much less so.

And it’s fine if you want to give side eyes to the guys on twitter who tout Sharpe based on 90 seconds of workout footage. But I’m gonna give you the same side eyes if you’re so certain that he’s not worthy of a top 4 draft pick based off of 90 seconds of workout footage.

90 sec workout footage isn’t doing much. I mean Yi Jianlin got drafted bc he had a great workout against the chair. Give me live competition against D1 players. I’m interested to see if he can ball out in live ball competition. Does he make good decision with the ball, does he have good BBIQ, etc? I never said anything about workout footage s you’re putting words into my mouth. I’m giving the side eye bc the hype is based on his HS rankings and nothing else. Even for Weaver, it’s still a gamble because there is literally no college tape to evaluate Sharpe. You’re just evaluating based on traits which is fine.

I mean Emoni was universally regarded as the best player in his class until he got to Memphis. Now, he’s projected to not to get drafted at 1st round.

There’s another prospect, Scott Henderson, in the same class as Emoni who skipped his last year at HS to play at Ignite. He’s their best player on the team and he’s projected to get drafted at top 3-5 because he showed out against better competition in HS.

Emoni wasn’t still the top prospect in his (2022, not 2021) class when he got to Memphis, was he? it sure feels like the fall from grace has taken a bit longer than that

Correct me if I’m wrong, but haven’t some scouts been able to see Sharpe work out in Kentucky practices? He wasn’t eligible to play, but I thought they had some scrimmages and got to see him participate.

He’s 21, the oldest of all top 10 players. He’s a tweener with questionable defense at the next level. I dunno, Benedict Mathurin is a two way player with higher upside than Keegan Murray imo

This isn’t theoretical.

He’s a better shooter than Ivey, taller than Ivey, and at 49 inch vertical safe to say can jump higher.

49" is not verified and I think it’s 100% fake. NBA combine is where we can compare athleticism so it won’t be theoretical once it’s over. Glenn Robinson can jump out of the gym but isn’t a functional athlete on the court.

We know that Ivey is a functional athlete on the court and is an elite athlete. Sharpe is unknown in D1 competition. Practices aren’t a good substitute for live games and HS and travel ball don’t offer much in terms of defense against Sharpe. The last game that Sharpe played was when players barely gave an effort on defense so it’s hard to glean on what he can do when defense gets tougher.

The silver lining with him is that he should be very productive so can be dealt for great value at some point, like Sabonis or other guys like that.

So do we know if Caleb Houstan got invited to either of the combines?

No word on Houstan or Christie. There was a vague rumor about Houstan getting the G-League invite, but nothing substantial.

Moussa 62
Caleb 64

Christie 38

Wild that Christie is so much higher than Caleb. I guess while his stats really weren’t any better, I guess he showed a bit more off the dribble/movement to his game than Caleb did.

Much better defensively too.

is it better to be undrafted, so you can pick your team, vs being drafted 55th? probably such a long shot from that position that it doesn’t much matter.
