2020-21 Roster Speculation

The fact that everyone is writing up playing time projections where everyone plays <30 minutes is why I’ve said that there will probably be some transfers you expect and some you don’t really expect.

It can be a problem in college hoops if you have 13 guys who all think they should play.

Certainly possible, but that would be an incredibly special group of players to accept those terms at the beginning of a season.

I only have capacity to skim through minutes speculation for next year, but it appears to be a lock Zeb Jackson will redshirt. Interesting?!?!?!

Appears to be a lock?

There’s no way DDJ would enter the season expecting to only play 15 mpg. Minutes distribution just happens based on the roster and practice. It’s not like Juwan will do an exit meeting with him in April and say, “Look Dave, you’re definitely coming of the bench and only going to play 15 mpg next season so make your decision accordingly.” The starting PG will be gone. The spot is open competition. He will have the opportunity to earn minutes. If he only plays 15 mpg, it will be at a time where its too late to transfer for the 2021 season.

He’s getting minutes on a team that might be more talented than ours right now. So I highly doubt he redshirts.

He’ll be going from being one of the oldest players on his team to one of the youngest. I doubt Zeb redshirts, but cracking the rotation won’t be easy.

This is … not a great way to look at the situation. Yes, there are multiple five-star/borderline five-star recruits on the team (Cunningham, Moody, Barnes, Sharpe) but comparing it to a college basketball team will get you in a whole heap of trouble.

Juwan played a lot of players before whittling down to this 8 man rotation. Some of that was due to injuries and some probably due to getting to know the players.

But I could see him doing the same thing next year: Rotate a lot of players until roles begin to solidify. It’s going to take a while to see what the freshman can give and how much added responsibility the returning players can take on.

The point is that when making the comparison, I think it’s easy to see that Zeb is definitely talented enough to not redshirt. It’s very hard to see a top-70 player of Zeb’s calibre doing so, especially with uncertainty at the guard positions next year. Unless there’s injury, I would be more shocked than surprised to see it happen.

Do I expect him to play more minutes than he is at MV this year? No way. But again, the comparison serves as a testament to his ability to simply not redshirt, which doesn’t take much.

I think I should reword my original statement since it might’ve been misleading:

He’s getting minutes on one of the best high school teams of all time. So I highly doubt he redshirts.

The comparison was intended to highlight how good MV is this year, not to say that getting playing time on MV and UM are parallels based off of surrounding talent.

I agree with that. He’s coming in more prepared than most freshmen we’ve had.

I hope you’re correct. I really like Dave’s game and potential.

Pg: Brooks 26 / DDJ 14
Sg: Christopher 28 / DDJ 8 / Franz 4
Sf: Franz 26 / Livers 14
Pf: Livers 16 / Johns 16 / Todd 8
C: Dickinson 15 / Todd 15 / Davis/Castleton 10

I think this would be pretty ideal but I don’t think Todd would be happy with playing most of his minutes at the 5. Not sure if there is a place for Zeb or Bajema in the rotation unless Zeb is comparable to DDJ. Brooks deserves more minutes but with Christopher coming in I think 26 is reasonable. The death rotation would be an 8 man one and give the Davis/Castleton minutes to some combination of Todd, Johns, and Dickinson.

I think DDJ is a transfer candidate (unless he’s on track to graduate in 3…). Might be hard to swallow, but I’m not sure he figures into next year, particularly if Christopher commits. Like the kid, but he may be better served seeking a leading role somewhere else. Think Dylan is spot on in predicting 1-2 surprise transfers…

No one is going to redshirt. But he’s not going to play much. General when projecting rotations I don’t account for what happens when we’re up on Presbyterian by 40.

He’ll probably get minutes here or there, but it seems unlikely that he factors majorly into the rotation unless a guard transfers. Also, keep in mind that Zeb does NOT play very much on Monteverde. He plays, but he’s very squarely a backup playing limited backup minutes on a team that has to promise that everyone will play.

Yeah I have him slotted for about 5 minutes a game (although projections are of course likely to be wildly inaccurate). He’s probably the type of guy to get minutes when we’re up on Presbyterian by 40 as you said, but also play extensively if one of our guards get hurt.

Point was that he wouldn’t redshirt.

So many unknowns still!

  1. Does Austin get a 5th year
  2. Do the fringe rotation players transfer (even MORE likely if Beilein is a destination)
  3. Does Livers come back? I could see scenarios where he plays himself into the draft a la DJ Wilson, and the injuries this season could push him into deciding to go to the league just as much as those injuries force a 4th year…
  4. IF DDJ and BJJ think they’re future pros, they’ll have to decide if UM will be the place to showcase it. I know I got shot down pretty quickly last week when I suggested BJJ, all I’m saying is they’ll at least have to ask the question.
  5. Todd still has to nix the overseas option

Bottom line, I think we’ll be under the scholly limit, and some guys we want to see play next year will not.

Are we even sure the NCAA still cares about scholarship limits? Maybe it’s worth testing the waters.

Johns will have a big role next year. I’m confident in that so I don’t see him leaving. In fact as wildly talented as Todd is I think the junior version of Johns will be a better college player next year.
