2015 Guard and Wing Recruiting (PJ Dozier, etc.)

Coaches like Rick Pitino who tells obvious off-guards that they will play PG are the worst.

I was thinking the same after reading the top 5 reaction article. Hopefully at least some recruits will start realizing that if you are 6-6 and able to shoot, Beilein will turn you into an NBA player.

Didn’t Beilein tell Chatman that he can play PG.

No, he said he stressed versatility and playing multiple positions but never that he is a PG.

Word is PJ Dozier’s recruitment is looking like UNC and UL leading with UM trending. I know UM can offer more immediate playing time. Who were the last perimeter players to go lottery for UL and UNC? Heck, when was the last time UL had a guard go 1st round? Have to think playing time and the 3 guards in the 1st round during the last 2 years will be an enticing sale.

UNC holds appeal based on proximity and tradition so I would assume they are the presumed favorite in this race

Kenny Williams with 6’5.5 wingspan per this article…Guestavo I’m sure that makes you slightly more impressed with him. This site ranks him #91 for their most updated rankings of 2015

If Ali, Coleman or Dozier go elsewhere then Kenny Williams is fine by me.

Dozier will visit Louisville Aug. 31, UNC Sep. 6 and Georgetown Sep. 12. I’m assuming he’ll visit UM Oct. 11 (PSU night game) as that is most likely our biggest recruiting weekend for both football and basketball - would love nothing more than a Dozier/Thornton commitment extravaganza.

Louisville’s track record with wings is not real impressive. They did have Terrance Williams as a lottery pick (I think 2009), but he didn’t do anything in the NBA.

Roy Williams, IMO, has done a nice job developing wing talent at UNC. McCants, Danny Green, Ellington, Harrison Barnes, and now PJ Hairston are all guys who have made the league. They run a good offense, so if Dozier went there I’d expect him to develop into a pro assuming he’s a hard worker.

It sounds like we’ll give Dozier a shot at playing some PG, and I remember he was impressed that after his injury, our staff reached out to him right away and reaffirmed their interest. Hopefully we can make a great impression when he visits. If so, maybe it turns into a Kam Chatman situation (spurns the regional powerhouse team for us). But I have to think UNC is the clear favorite. Local team, and obviously a great hoops tradition and a HOF coach.

I’m a couple days late, but I love this news. Dozier has been my favorite '15 recruit since the beginning and I think he’s underrated. Like Dylan says, his skill set is the closest match to LeVert’s, but not only that, I think his level of play will be pretty close. Not that I would project it, but I think he has the potential to be a one-and-done. I think he could step in, be one of the two primary ball-handlers with Walton, and flourish as a freshman. I honestly think he has more PG DNA than LeVert, but can easily play alongside Walton (and Thornton). Even if we have only a 20% chance with him, it’s better than zero.

I would take Dozier like a shot for 2015. At this point, we don’t know what will happen to Walton after this season, and the ideal would be to have someone who could play significant minutes at the off guard in 2015-16 if Walton stays, get in some time at PG, and then step into a starting PG spot in 2016-17, or step right in as a starting PG in 2015 if Walton leaves. I don’t have a good vibe about Coleman at this point, although he could fit that role too.

The likelihood is that Walton will at least be entertaining the idea of leaving early after this season, but like so many other players, we may not know for sure until long after the signing date, and if he does, I’d rather not be scrambling for a starting PG among late signees. I think any elite pure PG for 2015 who sees themselves as one-and-done may shy away from us because of the uncertainty with Walton.

Dozier be a stud. Just like Coleman, Brunson, E.Davis. Kennerd, Goodin, Winston, Thornton, Leaf, Battle. We just have to land 1-2 of these guys and well be ok. Can we?

Not sure PJ Dozier has the lateral quickness for the 1. I’d think MAAR-PJ Dozier-Chatman would be the trio if PJ came and Walton left…similar to last year w/ Caris and Nik, Chatman and PJ would handle most of the ballscreen and MAAR would have to defend, get out in transition and knock down shots.

If you are talking about 2015-2016, I will put Spike ahead of MAAR. MAAR has a year to learn the offense and he has a lot ground to cover. If you are talking about 2016-2017, we have to recruit a PG in that class, with MAAR/Dakish as possible backup.

Dozier is just as good laterally as Trey. Lateral agility isn’t as important on offense if you can change speeds. Defense is where lateral agility is imperative to check PGs

Which is what I was referring to.

Ehhh doubt Spike is ever a starter. Dawkins can defend and get out in transition like Derrick Walton did as a freshman.

Gotcha

I think people are really undervaluing MAAR. He has the ability to create offense for himself off the bounce and is a strong finisher. Needs to improve in terms of court vision and decision making but I really think he’s going to be a nice piece for us. Like his potential to be a good defender as well.
