This Year Is About Appreciating Something Pretty Good That's Not Great

ASF I’ve thought all along they only get 1 but I wasn’t going to share that on this forum and get 5 or 6 posters crucify me for saying it. They beat NW and that game will go down to the wire. Everyone else beats us.

Too many poor shots, slow getting into the offense, unproductive movement on offense, and little creating for others to get good looks. Defensively I still don’t think we know Tate is left handed.

Well - still other opportunities. Thought for sure we’d get this one. If only we had dropped just a couple more 3’s…

Well the same issues came up again today poor defense, reliant on the 3, backcourt lacking quickness to break down a defense. A turning point was down 7 and Dawkins takes a horrible gamble and OSU hits a 3 to go back up 10. People wonder why Dawkins doesn’t play more? Tonight is a perfect example lots of athleticism but doesn’t want to dedicate himself defensively. Not to mention they got dominated in the post by a guy 6’4 in Tate who I like but he schooled Robinson who’s 6’8. Robinson needs to wake up he’s either guarding Carter or Layman on Sunday.

Should be a close call for the tourney we are definitely on the bubble. A win vs Iowa or Maryland would be HUGE who knows what to expect with caris

You predicted the team would lose to Purdue – it didn’t. Then you gloat after the fact – because you were scared of a few message board posters? – that you predicted we’d lose a road game that we were underdogs in everywhere? We’re underdogs in every remaining game except NU, so it’s not like you’re going out on a limb. Is someone arguing that the team was going to win out?

Sometimes it’s as simple as we went 5-24 from 3 and they shot 36% from 3. Sure, we could’ve played better 2 point defense or worked for better 2s, And we probably let our missed 3s affect our defense at times. But these things work together. If they make their threes, it’s harder to sag. If we don’t, it’s easier to stay guard the paint. And, by the way, we out-rebounded OSU. They’re also fighting for their tournament lives and have a bunch of talent and a good coach. This was a toss-up more-likely-to-lose game. A loss is disappointing, but only a win could’ve really moved the needle.

Beat NU and win one in the B1G. That’s the baseline expectation. Should be enough to get 20/21 wins and into the tourney. Anything better would be great for this year, anything worse would be really disappointing. I’m going to at least try to enjoy the last several games as best I can.

We were 1pt favorites vs OSU. I know, I took Michigan.

So we everything you just said Michigan basketball is a very limited basketball team

Really? I guess I was just going by kenpom and other advanced stats guys. But with everything you’ve said about Michigan, you put your money on them? That’s interesting. I’m kind of the opposite.

This thread originated with me saying that this was a 20-win team that would have a winning conference record and make the tourney, but probably wouldn’t do much more – and that we should try to appreciate that, especially given the injuries. I don’t think I’ve ever said anything other than we’d have to make some 3s to beat good teams, especially away from home. Out-rebounding and beating Purdue despite poor shooting was a gutty win. Just about every team anywhere near the bubble is “limited,” especially when what they do best isn’t working. Doesn’t mean they’re not pretty good college basketball teams their fans should try to enjoy.

That tells you how highly I thought of OSU.

Ward Manuel is hardly an outsider and given his intimate knowledge of UM’s basketball past he would be hard-pressed to jettison Beilein. He was playing, studying or working at UM from 1986 to 2005, so he’s seen it all.

UM was expected to miss last year, projected to finish middle of the B1G this year, so at the moment JB is exceeding (media) expectations.

The only reason he is meeting expectations is because of where the media picked them?? Come on. This team isn’t very good and in no way are they meeting expectations.

Yes. There’s a difference between standards and expectations. Obviously middle of the pack is not the standard. But from a performance with the roster at hand standpoint, this year and last, they are meeting or exceeding expectations. Anyways, only the UM administration and Beilein know what the overall standards are from a recruiting, coaching and INTEGRITY standpoint. We all know they didn’t want to take a chance on the latter and that there is a balance to be struck with the former. He was a safe pick in that regard, as well as someone who could do more with less. In a sense he was a victim of his own success in 2013-14. This is not Kentucky…it’s a rebuild, not reload, program.

I have a major issue with the amount of misses in recruiting. I’m not talking about the kids who picked elsewhere. We have scholarships being taken up by flat out misses on players talents. That evaluation needs to get a whole lot better IMO.

He gets credit for rebuilding the program. We missed the tourney like 10 years before him so we’re definitely better off having had Beilein as our coach.

I don’t necessarily disagree with you, but your comment brings up a good discussion point. Every team has misses. Who, on our team, would you consider a Plan A miss? I’d say Donnal (although he is improving and might be pretty good as a junior and senior), Doyle, and Chatman.

Walton and Irvin were Plan A guys that I don’t consider to be misses.

The rest of our team is mostly comprised of Plan B, C, and D guys that we scrambled to pick up after we missed out on Plan A guys. I would say that most of them are playing about up to their expectations, or in some cases, exceeding them. That doesn’t necessarily mean that they are playing at a high enough level for Michigan to contend, though. I think this was the price that we paid for really trying to go after the top national guys. We missed out and were left scrambling a bit.

Someone should have informed the AD and Donors that Michigan is a rebuild program before renovating crisler and raising ticket prices.

I still do think we should make the tournament. Ken pom ranks us at 49 and are ranked 53 in the RPI. That is impressive considering our loss vs OSU. We need to win at least 2 of our final 4 to be a lock but if not I think we should be fine.

Agreed. I know some people have mentioned that house cleaning should be done in the offseason whether that means pushing people out or people leaving on their own? The question becomes do you quickly bring in new recruits to replace those guys? That’s like doubling down at the casino when you have a 12 against a dealers face card. If those guys don’t pan out next year you’re frankly looking at a team of.

Walton, Irvin, MAAR, Dawkins, Donnal, Simpson, Teske, Watson fill in the blank with another post or two. Is that a roster capable of making waves next year?

2014 was the only year that really blew and there were obvious mitigating factors: Robinson, Stauskas, McGary declaring. Hatch plane crash. In fall 2013 they had a young stacked roster, which makes it tough to sign grade-A talent, then poof! Who were they going to get in April 2014 other than MAAR and Dawkins? Be real.
