I disagree with this. I don’t think ZC and Tru are athletic enough to break long runs consistently. They’re part of the problem. Now none of this is actually ZC’s fault because he’s a freakin freshman who will get better, but that’s part of the issue.

That multiplied with our OLine deficiencies and Shea unwilling to pull makes it impossible to break long runs.

If you take a look at JK Dobbins tonight, he’s able to make the last guy miss very consistently and turns 10 yarder into like a 60 yarder. The closest we have to that is Turner, and he’s nowhere close to that level yet

You don’t?

The run blocking was ok today

I’m bummed for many reasons, but chief among them is that the duder that came out aggressively early in this thread was closer to correct than he deserves to be.

It’s funny to feel down about not just a win, but a cover, against a top 15 team, but…it feels impossible to beat Ohio State or Notre Dame with this offense.

I’m reluctant to post on this thread because it a football thread on a basketball forum, but here it goes.

I just read Ace’s report of the game on another blog and I’ve read lots of comments about yesterday’s game from a variety of sources, those that are published in some way and those that are just the opinions of friends and acquaintances.

I am struck by how entitled we seem to be as fans, not just in this but so often. Ace used 12 words to capture what was good about yesterday’s game and then devoted an entre article to, I guess, criticizing it. At least he seemed to suggest hold our nose while appreciating a win. Well, actually he didn’t criticize the defense. How could he. I’m guessing that was the best defensive performance by a college team yesterday. The defense was amazing. Yet, people, fans of Michigan football, are holding our noses…over a win…against a really good Iowa team with a very good and veteran QB and a stellar defense.

This this kind of thing occurs on the message boards of all big time college programs. In many ways it is, perhaps, a good thing because it indicates great fan interest and fan involvement. Imagine how bad it would be if no one cared. But Michigan fans do care.

Here is my problem. We are so self absorbed as fans. We seem to believe the game exists for us and for our enjoyment. And we hold our players, and our coaches to incredibly high standards, much higher standards than most of us, I assert, set for ourselves.

I believe it is right to hold our coaches to high standards. They are paid an insane amount of money to do what they do, far more than any but the most fortunate of us will ever make. But our players…that’s different story.

Many of you know that I am a supporter, a defender of our players. Most of our players will not play professionally. Most of them will graduate from college and they will get a job, just like we did. But unlike us, they will have lived their dream on the football field or the basketball court, juggling athletics and school. They will go to practice everyday and bust their butt. They will have given their blood and their sweat, and, yes, sometimes tears to represent us and our university on the athletic field. And then game day arrives and they will be evaluated in front of the world. Sometimes they will win and sometimes they will lose.

When they lose we will be disappointed, sure, but they will be even more disappointed than we will. They could have lost yesterday, but they didn’t. And they did fight to the end. The defense was amazing. They weren’t flawless, but they were outstanding. Let’s celebrate that. Some of us are. Let’s celebrate them. Some of us are. The offense struggled for most of the game…against a great Iowa defense. Let’s not criticize individual players or groups of players who were actually out there on the field, in the fight, giving the best that they could give against another team that wanted to win as badly as they wanted to win.

We, as fans, hold these kids to such a high standard. Sometimes I think we hold them to a standard that is unattainable. Make every throw. Catch every ball. Hit every hole. Make every block. Make every tackle. Make no mistakes. Make eight sacks and three interceptions. Whoops, we DID have eight sacks and three interceptions! Gosh that’s good. Play harder than perhaps any of us has ever played in our lives, at a higher level than most of us have ever played in our lives. And do it on national TV and in front of 110,000 fans. And, by the way, kudos to those fans yesterday, they were amazing, too! Believe me these kids want to win, and they want to be the best they can be!

We hold our kids to such a high standard. Sometimes, I fear, we believe it is our right, as fans to hold these kids to a higher standard, one that is, frankly, higher than the standard that we, many (most?) hold for ourselves. And that is where I have a problem.

I am a defender and a supporter of our players, and I always will be. As a former coach, I tend to support and defend coaches, too, but I have no problem holding them to the highest standards, especially at a school like Michigan. They are paid a LOT of money and are given a great privilege, the privilege of molding young men and in helping those young men reach their highest potential. Let’s not criticize our players even by position group, and let’s encourage our coaches, and yes we can be critical of THEM, but let’s encourage them to help our kids to be the best they can be.

For me, I was a wreck after the game yesterday, but a happy wreck, and I celebrate these kids, and their effort, and a WIN against an outstanding Iowa team. It wasn’t perfect, but nothing ever really is. I hope you’ll excuse me for posting a football message  on a basketball message board. Go Blue!

You guys know we won, right?

It was a joke. Lighten up Francis.

You are right, we can learn from a win or a loss, but when we have people who have this sense that they are entitled to criticize, and more than that to criticize players who probably want to win more than our fans want them to win, that’s a problem for me. But that’s OK because everyone has a right to their opinion. I just don’t like doing it publicly, especially when the object of that criticism is college kids.

Win or lose, we can always get better, and it’s really the job of our coaching staff and our players, themselves, to determine that and to work to help make it happen. If it doesn’t happen, we have a choice. We can watch or not watch. We won yesterday, the game yesterday, as Cory said, but, as you say, we still have things to work on, I can agree with you on that. But let’s not hold our kids to standards that are higher than the standards to which we hold ourselves.

Sometimes I think, what if everything I did in the work place was going to be watched and scrutinized by 110,000 people, and millions more on television, and then if I made a mistake or didn’t live up to the standards of all these people, they would criticize me publicly. What if people questioned whether I care enough, or I work hard enough, of if I have enough talent to do my job, based strictly on their opinion, and then they post that opinion on social media?

I’m 72 years old, but I’d be lying if I said I don’t give a damn about their opinion. These kids are 18,19, 20 years old, and no, they don’t have to read it. But truly we should just think a little before we write some of the things we do, especially about the players.

I agree with you that win or lose we can always learn. There is ALWAYS more to learn. I guess because I was a coach and a player, I know how hard our players work and how much they care. Actually, no, I don’t, because I think these kids work harder than I EVER worked in my playing days. How about you? We can always learn, even an old guy like me.

Didn’t want to start a separate OT thread, and this was the most applicable. But this was cool.

The Chris Evans expulsion definitely hurt this year.

Yep, Penn State got moved to a night game. Damn it.

Hahaha from what you posted I was expecting a prediction for a Michigan W, not a PSU route. I’m thinking it is 27-17 PSU tonight.

28-10, PSU. Patterson fumbles twice. Harbaugh scores another “Wha’ happened?” look as the fourth quarter clock ticks down. I would love, however, to be wrong.

I think tonight is an offensive struggle for both teams. A real sludge fart. I’m thinking it’s a race to 17 unless defense or special teams scores happen.

Neither QB is good, so it’ll be up to the two running games for both teams. I’m hoping our o-line can move their undersized d-line and pave the way to a W. Our running game could have a lot of success if Patterson would ever keep on the reads that are begging him to keep and take the chunk plays. I have zero confidence in him doing that.

Gonna be a long night…

Just so done with Harbaugh at this point. Choking is just apart of the program DNA under him.

Just intentionally setting up for the 2020 Revenge Tour

Fun game, I thought. Battled back from way down, all but had it tied. If your ego and self-image are completely wrapped up in whether your team wins or loses, then go enjoy being bitter–dumb way to live, but clearly–there’s a lot of that out there. I enjoyed the game. Both offense and defense maturing, and I will enjoy next week against ND, too.

I agree. I think we definitely deserved to win. But part of football is being lucky - definitely more so than basketball, and luck wasn’t on our side today. It sucks that we’re basically out of contention for anything significant, but as a barometer for the future where officiating/luck will even out, today was encouraging.

I don’t get any optimism coming from this game. They should have started playing in the 1st quarter. Or versus Wisconsin. Our season is over. No silver linings there
