Williams and Kiser are both listed at 6’3", Brown 6’1", Phelia 6’0" and Nolan 5’11". That’s a fairly tall starting lineup. Taller than Miami’s. But, there’s no Naz out there. Kiser is solid but Naz had a knack for rebounding, and was stronger.
I haven’t looked over the stats for other games, so I’m not sure if last night was an outlier or not.
EDIT:
I see that, even after last night’s game, Michigan has a +10.5 rebounding advantage average over their opponents on the season.
I think Miami sped us up and that made for a disjointed game for both teams. Their pressure made it more difficult to get into the offense. We made some bad decisions on passes. OTOH, the pressure D put as at the line, where we hit over 90%. We also had 17 assists on 24 made baskets, and forced Miami into 27 turnovers. Brown is now playing PG. She scored 26, mostly on mid range and FTs, 6 assists, only 2 turnovers. IMO, Williams plays too soft at both ends. Kiser scored 20, but wasn’t a force on the boards. Her defense was pretty good, drew several charges, plays very smart.
I haven’t seen that much of Cameron Williams, but she seemed to just get out elevated for rebounds a bunch last night. Obviosuly we can’t keep allwoing teams to rebound 19 of 33 misses.
I agree on the turnovers - I think it’s just part of how KBA plays, and I think that with every coach they’re willing to accept (or not accept) negative things (like Beilein was totally fine not going for offensive rebounds). I think part of the trend is that our theoretical starting PG the past two years spend tons of time injured (Dilk), and while I think Kampschroeder and Brown are good players, they aren’t really “point guards”.
I didn’t get to watch yet, but I saw that Chyra Evans got her first time of the season and logged 15 minutes which knocked Alyssa Crockett down to 5 minutes. That caught me by surprise in the box score for sure.
Just cannot say enough about how huge Emily Kiser returning to this team is. She is #3 nationally in win shares, tied with Caitlin Clark and behind only Angel Reese and Maddy Siegrist (via Her Hoop Stats):
She’s playing a ton of minutes (98th percentile), has usage in the 85th percentile, and is in the 97th percentile for points per play:
That’s pretty wild! I had to dig to find it, but the official stats show Cameron Williams was -7 and Alyssa Crocket was -2. That’s a pretty big swing. It’s also interesting to see the usage difference between Williams and Evans:
Williams had 33% usage, Crockett had 40% usage, Evans had…3.2% usage. Trying to figure out what it means that she was +18 on the floor while almost never touching the ball. It looks like she had a single possession (and scored). I need to go back and watch my recording. Haven’t had a chance to do so yet.
I think Crockett’s 3 turnovers in 4:54 is doing most of the work on her usage.
Williams took 9 shots in 17 minutes so they were clearly trying to get her the ball a bunch.
There is also a distortionary effect with Kiser’s 12 FTs I think which don’t count as usage (she took as many shots from the floor as Williams in 20 more minutes)
Yikes. I only got to see the 4th quarter, but this is a wild box score. Won the TO margin by 10, +6 on offensive rebounds, +5 on blocks, +9 on FTA, and -5 on fouls and somehow managed to lose at home to a MAC team. Looking at the box score it feel like you just burn the tape on this one and move on, although letting them shoot 50% from the floor and 40+% from 3 is…not great, Bob.
They fought hard to get the lead back and Maddie had a good shot down the stretch to take the lead but it didn’t fall. Two TOs in the final possessions did them in.
A little concerned about the dropoff in Maddie’s shooting percentage from 3, but still encouraged by the massive uptick from Laila to offset it.
The Big Ten is going to be an absolute meat grinder. Not a non-con loss you want to take if you want to host a tournament weekend, but hopefully it’s just a bump in the road.
