Michigan Women's Hoops

It’s amazing how many talented young women there are playing basketball now! It’s like the pool is getting deeper year by year. It’s exciting as a fan that U of M has a solid coach and looks to be developing a really solid program. I’m looking forward to seeing how U of M’s team continues to grow over the next few years!

Yea, Woodson is the one ranked in the top-30. Brown isn’t in ESPN’s top-60. But, I don’t think they’ve updated their rankings in months. We’ll see where Macy is at (or isn’t) when they more the '23s to the Top-100.

Looks like a very good hire here:

Pretty poor freshman year numbers.

Women’s Hoops’ first McDonald’s A.A. I’ll take it.

Great addition to help sooth the post-Naz blues.

Freshmen never have the same impact as in Mens hoops because the sport is significantly older.

I went through and watched a couple Oregon State games to watch Kampschroeder and she looked good. Oregon State basically just put her in a corner and had her stand there for long stretches of the game, but when they ran sets to get her involved outside of the corner she really made things happen. She can get to the basket and make good passes, while also being a confident 3-point shooter.

She adds one more piece to what is shaping up to be a really good backcourt. Nolan, Phelia, Brown, Wiggins (who is really talented and I expect will grow into an electric point guard by the end of the year) and now Kampschroeder is a good start. The weakness of this team the last 4 years may end up being its strength this year.

As far as scholarships go, Michigan has one left to give with Taylor Gibson entering the transfer portal, which I’m sure the Wolverines will miss the 3 minutes she played this year. I’ve got a feeling that Emily Kiser is coming back for a 5th year which would be huge for depth in the frontcourt, but if you want to entertain yourself here’s a list of all the transfers this year.

A Big Ten summary: Indiana is getting a ton of talented players and will be really good, Maryland will be a completely different team and Iowa picking up Molly Davis from CMU adds valuable depth and a second ballhandler to take pressure of Caitlin Clark.

Kiser would be a massive keep, I didn’t realize she was considering it. Lots of pressure is going to be on Cameron Williams next year, having Kiser there to absorb some of the work inside would be massive.

Kiser, Williams and an in-shape Varejão would be a really good frontcourt with a ton of size that can fill the Naz-sized hole pretty well.

People sleep, but Varejão played in front of Kiser and was the first off the bench her freshman year. She was really good before COVID screwed her over and if she’s dedicated over the summer to come back in great shape and focused, she can be a monster.

Yeah, I went to the game @NW this year, where Naz was in foul trouble (as was Williams), which forced Izzy into action. You could still see the talent there, but often it looked like even she didn’t believe in herself.

I really liked her minutes as a freshman. I was really bummed when she had travel issues.

Is Taylor Gibson for sure in the portal? I can’t find anything about that.

I haven’t found anything on her social media, but this blog has her as in the transfer portal and so does the reddit post I liked above.

I may be unreasonable, but a lineup of

Phelia
Brown
Nolan
Kiser
Williams

With a bench of Varajao, Wiggins, the OSU transfer, and maybe some freshman contributions (I’m not ruling out Elise Stuck from being useful either)

Seems like a conference title contender if abhorrent health doesn’t get in the way.

I’m very optimistic on Cameron Williams, given her talent level and this staffs track record developing bigs.
