N’W up 9-2 early on 2 seeded Louisville
IU and N’W up 12 at half. Results hold and there will be 5 B1G teams in the Sweet 16,
Big Ten should take notes on this. Neither Baylor nor Michigan fans have to choose between the men or the women.
I was worried that you were implying you lit Darko Milicic on fire. It seemed out of character for you
That was an interesting draft choice wasn’t it! Not a lot of social media or sports forums back then, but I can just imagine the comments if there had been! Those were the Dark days of the DEtroit Pistons!
B1G ladies took care of business. This round will be tough, probably only favored in one game Maryland.
Yes, the B1G has a legitimate claim to be the BEST conference in NCAA Basketball! With Michigan, Indiana, Iowa, and Maryland the B1G has 1/4 of the teams in the NCAA. Tournament. Yep, B1G Women’s Basketball, truly one of the best conferences in basketball!
Just an awful pick, I understood the logic though. They did win the title so not the worst thing ever at least. Drafting Bosh would have been ideal, and is an interesting hypothetical. (With Rip and Tayshaun wade and Melo wouldn’t have fit -but their talent would have forced the issue in hindsight)
It’s amazing to me that so many of us just sit around and criticize, but none of us are in the arena having to make the decisions. Sometimes the best laid plans don’t work out. Sometimes they do, but so often we just don’t really know what goes into the making of those decisions, yet as a society we seem to just love to criticize. And, while I try not to criticize others publicly, I get critical and make judgements, too. Like that seemingly “dark” decision to select Darko with such a high pick in the draft.
Sometimes, though, things workout remarkably well, for everyone. Dave Bing…even, though I wanted the guy who caused me to fall in love with Michigan Basketball and who “built” Crisler Arena, “The House that Cazzie Built!” And that guy sure worked out pretty good, too!
I would argue that Darko allowed Joe D to be aggressive to get Rasheed Wallace. No Darko = No Wallace. They woudn’t have won a title without trading for Sheed and Sheed really took them over the hump. It was seen as a huge gamble because of Sheed’s personality and off-field issues at Portland so Joe D was able to give up little to get him and it paid off big time for him.
Drafting Wade and Melo would’ve been blocked by Rip and Tayshaun so it didn’t make sense to them at the time. Bosh wasn’t considered to be in the same tier as LBJ and Darko, Wade and Melo. Darko was considered to be a top 2 prospects regardless of the team so I don’t blame Joe D for drafting him.
There were very few criticizing the pick when it happened. It was near consensus that it was the right selection. Larry Brown is just about the worst coach you could have for him though. Phenomenal coach, but not a long term planner. Between 1972-2018, he was coaching for except three of those years. Had 14 different jobs. His resume reads closer to your typical soccer coach than it does a basketball coach.
Chuck Nevitt was the original HVC for the Pistons!
Allegedly, the Nuggets were trying to trade up with us to get him. I wasn’t particularly sold but there was a lot of hype around him. “Dirk with a mean streak.” was one scouting report. They got the later part right but not the former.
I don’t blame Joe D either. It didn’t work out beyond a year or two, and I don’t know how much darko allowed sheed to come to the Pistons, so I can’t speak to that.
I was at the clinching game 5, top sport spectator moment of my life probably.
If it hasn’t been discussed, the Michigan/Baylor game is tomorrow at 3pm (Eastern) and is on ABC.
My wife and I will be in northern Michigan tomorrow in the Glen Arbor area, hiking the trails, Alligator Hill, Pyramid Point, and tasting wine, though hopefully not simultaneously. My wife just needs a little time away as we care for our “special” needs grand daughter pretty much 24/7, and we LOVE Leelanau County. We’ve already decided, if it’s raining and we don’t feel like going out, no problem, we’ll just turn on the fire in our room at The Homestead, pop open a bottle of a nice local red blend and watch basketball. And, I can even relax watching the ladies play! We had planned on watching basketball in the evening anyway, but, who knows, maybe we’ll get an early start! Basketball, my lady, and red wine, how could life get any better than that!
Check out Palmer Woods for hiking. It is on Wheeler Rd. Very close to the Homestead and is owned by the Leelanau Conservancy, who are doing great things in Leelanau. Palmer Woods has both hiking trails and mountain bike trails, and they do not intersect. Enjoy your trip!
I find these reseedings interesting on both the men’s and women’s side:
Have fun. The Homestead is a very nice place out and away from the hustle and bustle of TC. South Airport Rd in TC has become the mini version of 28th St in GR with the weekday bumper to bumper traffic the past 10 yrs.
