Michigan Players in the NBA

Always wondered how M would have fared had Jamal not gotten the Ziggy by the ncaa.

Ellerbe would have been fired eventually regardless as I doubt he ends up showing he is a good coach. But wonder if they would have still gone with the ā€œsqueaky cleanā€ hires afterward.

Who else played in the NBA from those years? I know Crawford, Bernard Robinson Jr., and Chris Hunter all played, though I don’t think Hunter was drafted. Did Courtney Sims play a little?

Sims and Petway were multiple time D-League All Starts

Sims was an early aughts D-League star

Sims ended up having a long career in remote countries around the world. He only played in 5 NBA games in his career. Hunter surprisingly managed to play 60 games. Robinson was a second round pick and played in 128 career games. All of the other guys from that era basically flamed out without sniffing the NBA (Dion Harris, Daniel Horton, Laval Blanchard, Lester Abram, etc.) I guess if you want to take credit for Epke Udoh he had a solid NBA career for a few years.

It’s pretty odd that Amaker was unable to produce a single solid NBA player. I think time has shown that he’s a decent coach.

It’s also been nearly two decades since Michigan has had an NBA All-Star. I think Franz could make at least one in his career. I’m not sure about anyone else projecting that highly, just yet. I guess Poole could be in the mix, if he keeps improving. As long as G.S. is still a top team, he’ll not even have to improve that much more.

Eh…I think Amaker is a lot like Brady Hoke. Give him a lower-tier team and he’s a solid coach. I think the big stage is a little too much for them. Amaker had PLENTY of chances to make a tournament run at Michigan and redeem the program like Beilein ultimately did and it never worked.

As for all-stars, I think Caris Levert has a chance to sneak onto an all star team if he stays healthy and is on a team where he can pile up stats in a hot first half of the season. Franz might be able to also, though I think one of the things that makes him so good is that he is good at a lot of stuff and not necessarily ever going to be a ā€œstarā€ in the league.

Love the Amaker/Hoke comparison.
Like both guys. Each did some good here. Neither were ever going to get us to where we wanted to go.

I think Poole and Franz are the ones with a chance. I think Levert at this stage has absolutely no chance. He’s the third best guard on the Cavs.

You think Poole has a chance but Caris doesn’t?

I’m not saying Cavs version of Caris. I’m saying a version where he’s stat stuffing on a team where he has to be the #1 or #2 option every game and gets added to the team because he stayed healthy and caught fire for two months.

Realistically the only answer is Franz.

Yes because at this point Caris is 27, he’s not improving a ton and is just nowhere near AS level. Stat stuffing players don’t make the ASG on bad teams unless they’re much better and younger than Caris. JP will very likely never reach AS level play either but at least he’s young enough to say the possibility is still there if he really hits on development

Long-term I see Caris having a Lou Williams/Jamal Crawford type career. A professional scorer off the bench.

I mean there is a decent argument that Poole is the second best offensive player on the Warriors right now.

Always fun to check in on what DARKO thinks. All 4 dudes right about at league average.

Caris 's window is closing/closed because if his age and the guards coming behind him such as Garland, Cade and others; but Poole absolutely can be an all-star. Even Kerr said as much a couple days ago. He’s still only what, 22? And his game is rapidly on the rise. Even his defense is starting to improve.

Poole can be all star, anyone that thinks otherwise hasn’t seen what he’s done in the league this year, especially over the last month plus. The Achilles heel of Caris’ game is that he’s never developed a reliable 3 point shot, meanwhile Jordan will likely be a career 38-40% shooter on high volume and high difficulty. Look at his FT% this year if you think that sounds outlandish.

Didn’t Duncan go to All-Star game last season or 2020? Maybe just the 3-pt contest, but I thought he was on the team. He had a season for the ages.

Edit: 3rd team G-League the year he played. Couldn’t locate all-star team players.

He may have been part of the weekend, but Duncan was not named to an All-Star team.

If guys like AC Green, BJ Armstrong, and Mo Williams can make an All-Star team, then Poole can make an All-Star team.
