Michigan Players in the NBA

If this board stops being a space for people’s honest opinions, that would be a sad day. I would not enjoy it if everytime I had a hot take, it got 40 likes and everyone agreed. It’s good when people don’t like it. It creates conversation and that’s what a come here for. I do appreciate when people concede the point when the facts are presented. @kturnup handled it like a G recently. Everyone act like the second best Kyle for minutes projections and we’ll be fine.

I don’t know why he gave you any flack. The Warriors didn’t think he was a rotation guy…sending him to the G League multiple times. Until recently Poole’s best moments have been when most of their roster was out.

Credit to Poole for working his tail off to improve his game and fight his way into the rotation and to stay in the league. He had a rough start, but has rewarded their patience. He’s still really young so it is good to see an NBA team not give up on him.

But nothing you said was inaccurate.

For posterity - it was noted above that the Pels were playing a dreadful lineup (true) - but that sort of undersells Jordan’s accomplishment, because the Warriors did too - both Steph and Draymond sat this game (at least part of why Jordan got the volume he did). Still - playing with the ball in your hands on that teams first unit without Draymond around to help spread it around is a LONELY job, and while I didn’t watch, I’d bet the majority of what he did was unassisted.

I believe I dissented on your opinion of JP a few days ago (going from dreadful to not a net negative from year one to year two is a big sign to me that JP could be something) but I mean honestly anyone giving constant and honest Michigan NBA updates is going to come across a little like a downer.

As for the Gleague stint, its clear the Warriors thought it would be beneficial for him and so far it seems like it’s transformed him as a player. I’m excited to see how he does next year. And I’d love for Franz to end up there too, he’d be a perfect fit for them

Being a fledging NBA consistent rotation player probably beats “ going and standing in the corner.”

Yeah I was probably a little overly negative - his net performance for the year is right around dead average true shooting (give or take a tiny bit), and more passing ability than he had flashed. It’s just that he’s rarely played there - he’s been much better and much worse. He’s young, so that’s great. I think his situation will be interesting because he’s currently their third guard (and sort of primary backup PG) but they are bringing in at least 30+ more guard minutes with Klay. Will the Warriors go all in next year? If so, is Poole as backup PG part of that (rather than backup PG for a fringe playoff team)? It’s possible at this point, certainly.

playoff time boys. #GoBlue

Nice that many of our alums (Levert, Poole, THJ, Burke, Duncan) will be playing in the playoffs. The tense off-season of searching for that next contract begins for the rest (GR3, DJ, Iggy, Moe).

Do you think Orlando will be interested in a contract for Moe and/or Iggy?

I think Brazdeikis is more likely. I think Mo has sort of established what he is.

I personally have no clue. Not sure what state the Magic roster is in and didn’t really watch any of their games down the stretch. Moe actually shot pretty well from outside during his tenure there (37%) so there might be some interest in a team-friendly contract.

Iggy is a similar story. Maybe they throw an end-of-the-bench contract at him since they gave him a lot of run late in the year. He did shoot 39% from three for Orlando and if you take out just one bad game where he went 1-for-7 he actually hit 50%.

My guess would be that they take one, not both next year so that they have someone who they are familiar with on the deep bench.

Thanks, yeah–I was being sarcastic. I was just a full-on JP homer from jump, and took criticism of him a little personally. It’s always fun when the guy you champion proves people wrong. But there was nothing like the outpouring of ugly here that Jordan received elsewhere.

Can I implore you to add TS% as well? Would really help high volume 3 point shooters like Duncan and Tim I’m sure.

League average TS% has been around 56% the last two years (don’t have 2021 data yet), so Robinson, Poole, and Hardaway are doing well from that perspective. Moe too I guess, but given his defense you’d like to see it higher than league average.

Woof yeah. People were soooo mad at Poole for doing young player stuff.

His run since returning from the G-League starts to show glimpses of a Vinny Johnson Microwave type of role. Come off the bench hunting shots, try to get hot and fire up your team, probably not yet a starter quality guard in the league, but on a night when he’s hot you ride him for more minutes.

Watching Poole’s game it’s pretty dang impressive that his TS% is over league average because he was taking some super difficult shots, especially when Steph was out. I’m really looking forward to seeing what he can do next year with a more defined role.
