I bet they will make a 30 for 30 out of this recruitment in a few years. I would suggest titling it “good vs evil”.

This guy is saying Brown will eliminate one team every other day…anyone heard this yet?
Here’s the source of that report, @sking12345 http://forums.rivals.com/threads/more-jaylen-brown.86445/
the optimism is around the kid's stated criteria, which wholeistically points to UM. I don't think Adidas is the sole hope for optimism. agree no one knows much.my fear is less about not having jaylen to have a good team, but more of the recruiting momentum. here we are on a guy JB never really goes after, last top guy to decide, with perception among masses that we’re that team (i.e. people reading crystal balls/headlines) and in jaylen’s criteria, all the right reasons to come play here… to lose is just another mark of being pretenders for big time recruits (even if we get Kenny Williams).
Look here’s the reality…on the ‘nerd’ to ‘cool’ spectrum, probable perception among HS kids is that UM is much closer to the nerd end of the spectrum, whereas somewhere like UK is probably at the peak of cool. Our ‘culture’ (whatever that means) just doesn’t attract alpha dog type players in my opinion because of that perception in part. You can see it in the type of players we have on the roster, as they tend to be more passive type of kids, both in personality, and on the court. I think getting a player like Brown may aid in changing that perception to a certain extent.

Does this pattern make sense? I thought he eliminated UCLA on the 27th. No one yesterday, right?

Could be simply he’s going to trim his list of 5 to 2 like Bossi describes. The only thing I’m expecting right now is a decision sometime next week.
Lots of generalizations there, Matt. I wouldn’t have called Burke or Stauskas passive, or McGary or Hardaway for that matter. Spike plays with some flair and swagger, too. Glenn, Caris, and maybe Irvin? Sure.
The Fab Five, obviously, was “cool.” It can be tough to recruit kids who seek this factor and also want to do what it takes to win. That was what I loved about the Fab Five - those guys were very mature and unselfish players from day one. That second group - the “Fresh Five” - and the class that followed, not so much. Only Traylor, Baston and Ward (his senior year) were team players. Bullock was OK, though I dislike him for other reasons. Taylor, Mitchell and White were cancers.
That’s one important thing to JB’s approach - there are no cancers in his program.
Interesting theory, but perhaps too binary (Uk=cool, UM=uncool).
Where does UCLA fall on that spectrum? People assume it is inherently “cool” to be in Westwood but one visit to a half-empty Pauley Pavilion for a pac12 snorefest in which the coach’s son dribbles all the air out of the ball may suggest otherwise.
On the other hand, GR3 dropping 12-foot alley-oops from Burke on the reg was pretty cool, and much cooler than anything that has ever happened in the history of Wisconsin basketball, but they still got Nigel Hayes. If Michigan has a “coolness” image problem it could presumably be easily corrected by hanging a massive print of that Fab Five photo with Webber sitting on the rim in the practice gym. I suspect they won’t do that but it’s their loss.
I guess you’re right that kentucky is cool. .
Regardless of whether MattD’s assertion is true (and I certainly understand elements of it without going to quite that extreme, as others articulated well, above), but it would also seem that if anyone is impervious to making a decision on such factors, it’s Jaylen. Seems like he’s looking to make a business decision and is a balanced, thoughtful kid.
Its not my MY contention that UM isn’t cool while UK is, my point is that it is most likely the perception of HS kids…and I think most of us know that is probably true.
We’re really going to have this debate again?

I think you are creating a narrative to try to explain why we miss out on certain recruits. But there isn’t really a whole lot of evidence to support that. McGary, for example, is certainly not passive on the court or off it. Same can be said for Burke, Stauskas, Hardaway, Morgan, and Morris.

Just because you’ve made UM uncool in your daughter’s eyes doesn’t mean other HS kids feel the same way.
I kid, I kid.
In all seriousness, I think Matt may have a legitimate point re: perception of coolness, even if it is not the most important criterion for most recruits.
But I also agree with Voltron that it doesn’t seem like Jaylen Brown, specifically, is obsessed with coolness as some other athletes may be (Booker comes to mind). I think Brown has his own criteria, which are unknown to us and which we may or may not satisfy.

Is this even accurate? Is this true? Im not saying I do not believe it, im just wondering how true it could be.

Not from Jaylen’s mouth, no. But Evan Daniels has said he’s confirmed UCLA, Georgia, and Georgia Tech are no longer under consideration. Other sites are saying the same.
Is Drake going to be in warmup lines at Michigan anytime soon? Nope.
Is the kid that picks a school because Drake is at midnight madness going to be less passive on the court or more of an alpha dog? Nope.
Is Wisconsin soft because they have a bunch of kids that think stenography is hilarious? Nope.
Just to name two… Trey Burke and Nik Stauskas were alpha dogs. No doubt about that.
Yeah but if Drake hadn’t airballed that shot all bets are off, Dylan.

I tried to avoid it, but since you chimed in, I’ll bite. You name TWO players that were alpha dogs over JB’s tenure. Let’s get real here, how many soft kids have been on the roster here during JB’s time? It almost gets to the point where you simply can’t have a realistic conversation without someone getting their feelings hurt…
The bigger point is that our ‘culture’/being viewed as ‘nerdy’ is a stigma for a decent portion of players in my opinion…
