Jaylen Brown - Will Likely Use OV for UM

Overseas looking like a plausible option.

Why wouldn’t you go overseas? Make a million bucks and the coaches are still decent. Seems like a no-brainer unless you think you’d get into trouble or something with an 18-year old having all that money in a foreign country.

Lol… some National Board guys listing Brown outside of the 2015 top 5.

Hey Matt, if he goes overseas, I don’t want you to list him as an example of a recruit Beilein couldn’t close. Deal?

I don’t know what’s going on with his recruitment. Seems like the only ones that do are Brown and his mother. With that in mind, the recruiting process can be a pain in the ass for a lot of kids. Imagine 40-60 year olds peppering your phone with calls and texts every day for up to two years. You would think that all of that would speed up the process but he is clearly on his own timeline. We will see.

Matt, what do you think about Brown being ranked behind:

  1. Ben Simmons
  2. Skal Labissiere
  3. Jamal Murray (I’ll just consider him a '15 kid)
  4. Cheik Diallo
  5. Allonzo Trier
  6. Diamond Stone
  7. Brandon Ingram

Anybody beyond Simmons, Ingram, and Skal seems like a stretch to me.

You should venture over there. I don’t have time to argue with them much today.

What’s Beilein’s approach to contact?

I know they like to wait until June 15th for the first contact, and I respect that much.
But is he after these kids as much as any other coach with the rest of his contact (calls, texts, letters, visits, etc)?

There are some obvious pros, but also a lot of potential drawbacks. I think you need a strong support system and people to go over there with you or can definitely run into problems. And it’s not the NBA, but it’s professional basketball so people expect results.

That’s the million dollar question, Im inclined to believe he doesn’t beg as much.

I sure hope he doesn’t beg as much. I’m also glad he’s not a “snake oil” salesman.

Constant contact and showing strong interest does not have to equate to begging or snake oil.

We have a good brand. Great academics. Nice facilities and support staff. Great conference. Nice city. Good coaching staff with one of the best X/O coaches in the game. We’re putting players in the NBA. We have an offense that lets multiple guys get up a good number of shots.

…the sales pitch is on our side. I’m just curious how strong, compared to others, our contact is with recruits. We’re not behind in recruiting only because others have snake oil or beg.

100% with you, JBlair, on the first paragraph. Not sure on your second paragraph but I do know JB is a workaholic, and I do appreciate his impeccable character, but then I’m a 68 year old so what do I know?!?

I know when he recruited Patrick Patterson back at WVU he had the assistant in charge of his recruiting create a daily plan/log of who to contact in Patterson’s camp on a daily basis. Beilein had a person to contact every day which potentially included Patterson himself, his mother, his father, his head HS coach, his assistant HS coach, and his AAU coach. Every day during the week he made sure there was contact with at least three of these people.

The assistant (Matt Brown) had a more personal relationship with Patterson (that’s usually how it works) and texted him whenever he had lunch or a study hall (yes, they knew his daily school schedule).

Have to think it’s the same way with Brown. Difference is…Brown isn’t responding but he isn’t (reportedly) responding to anyone.

I sure hope he doesn't beg as much. I'm also glad he's not a "snake oil" salesman.

There’s a difference between being a snake oil salesman and pushing hard.

I love the way everyone on this board thinks they’re some kind of great salesman, and if only JB knew what they know, he would be closing on every recruit.

Of course I think UM has a lot to offer. But I’m biased. There are a LOT of schools that have a lot to offer. Some have achieved far more on the court than we have in recent history (UNC, Kentucky, Duke, Kansas, etc.). Others offer great weather and great basketball (Arizona, UCLA, Florida). Others offer surefire Hall of Fame coaches (Louisville, MSU, Syracuse, for example). And that doesn’t even take into account schools where guys can figure out how to get paid, and how to stay in school without going to class, or without actually taking tests themselves.

And then some kids just like to play close to home somewhere, where their friends and family can see them play, and where they feel comfortable.

And, ShotFake, there’s a difference between being a classy salesman who sells features and benefits and a pushy one who will say anything to get a sale.

Not sure how this makes any difference now that Caris is 90% staying…

Beyond rehashing the debate over being the man/getting 30 shots per game, I would expect Michigan to continue recruiting Jaylen Brown regardless of LeVert’s decision.
