I wonder how many guaranteed contracts will be given out this year given the current landscape?
If the NBA can’t finish the season and the start of next year is up in the air, wouldn’t the G League be one of the first to get scaled back?
Can’t imagine willingly continuing to give guaranteed contracts right now. Size of the contracts being minimal probably doesn’t matter either. Saving money is saving money right now.
The rest of this is not directed at the poster I quoted.
I don’t really understand the discussion in this thread right now.
There are a lot of players who “announce” whatever that means that they are entering the draft and testing the waters and then come back to school. As @goblue8 mentions, it is a long list. Some are more serious than others.
But to be honest, none of that really matters as far as another situation. Isaiah Livers will do what Isaiah Livers does and it is a personal decision just like it was for Moe Wagner, Charles Matthews, DJ Wilson, Jordan Poole, whoever else. Sometimes guys come back, sometimes they go.
The fact that you can tell he would kill it in interviews based on interviews and press conferences that you saw remotely, suggests that he could be just as effective in an nba evaluation interview conducted remotely.
I don’t disagree with you, I just think that Dotman made a very strong statement with regards to Livers announcement, that to be honest, seemed to be more speculation than anything with little to base it on.
Much of his first lengthy paragraph had some strong definitive statements that just seemed like it went in a circle. Who cares if Livers announces he is going in or if a coach announces he is testing the waters for the player. Both are announcements to the NBA that said player is interested.
If the NBA responds to the player or to the coaches announcement regarding the player with positive feedback then player is in, if not player is out. The thought that the player isn’t all in with the announement type or style doesn’t make sense. The purpose of the process is for the NBA to tell the player whether they, NBA, in their opinion thinks the player should stay or go.
Post just didn’t make sense to me, even with all the responses still doesn’t. Obviously players want positive feedback, its their dream, anyways I will drop it as I am probably violating posting rules which wasn’t the intent.
But why would they issue a correction unless he has not, in fact, hired an agent? As you note, you can still hire an agent and return to school.
UM has been in this position now with Harris, Morris, Burke, GRIII, McGary, Hardaway, Wilson, Wagner, Matthews, Poole, Iggy, and now Livers (the position of a guy on the fence considering leaving for the NBA early but also thinking about returning). It seems to me the guys who were not particularly happy with their roles or had some personality conflicts with JB are the guys who left (Harris, Morris, Hardaway, Wilson, Poole), while the guys who seemed generally happy (Burke, GRIII, McGary, Wagner, Matthews) came back. Much of the analysis last year was that Iggy had signed with an agent and that might influence his decision to stay in. Livers seems to be happy. I’ll bet if it’s close, he returns - if he gets what he’s looking for, of course, he’ll leave.
Obviously, I’m not arguing DJ and Poole (for example) made the wrong choice - they both went in the first round and made the right call. I’m just saying guys who were unhappy about their college situation are more likely to leave in the first place.
Livers’ announcement read like that but his comments afterwards made it sound like he’ll stay if he doesn’t get drafted. And he’s not showing up on any draft boards. Tillman will definitely get drafted.
