Probably allows Michigan to pay him more than the other assistants.
Pardon my profound ignorance, but is this a common position among many collegiate staffs? Don’t ever recall JB ever having one. I’ve heard “Head Assistant Coach” thrown about (though I’m not sure if in an official capacity), but I don’t recall “Associate Head Coach.”
Jerry Dunn was the last associate head coach that Michigan had. It’s basically used as a promotion for assistants

MSU has one.
It would have been hard to give it to Yak or Saddi if Juwan kept Beilein’s staff. That’s probably true a lot of places. Giving the title to Martelli seems like a no brainer since he already has the role and the higher pay to go along with it.
