Iffff we were to look for a coach who would be realistic targets?

This cluster**** of an offseason might turn out to be a positive for one person only: Austin Davis. The roster situation may give him a shot at that previously elusive 5th year at his dream school.

Then again, maybe Coach Juwan is going to have the talk with him at the end of next season regardless.

Dylan, do you know what coaches were involved in Franz Wagner’s OV last week? Is there any chance Warde Manuel would have met with him and his family?

Nearest I can think of offhand is Dana Altman, who was at Creighton for 16 years and rejected overtures from bigger schools several times before finally moving halfway across the country to Oregon. At one point, he even accepted the Arkansas job for a day, then changed his mind and stayed in Omaha.

Fair enough, I guess I look at the combination of Fab 5 plus all the years of playing with so many guys in the NBA gives him a leg up that we may not have previously had in recruiting. Beilen was absolutely outstanding at identifying the right guys, the right fit and the sometimes overlooked in building a team. I know that playing by the rules ultimately hurt JB with 5 stars, and he pulled in his fair share of top recruits, but my hope is we can be in the mix with even more top 50 guys now. Like you said its way too early to know but thats my hope. To maintain or improve upon what JB has done you either need to out coach him, develop talent better, or out recruit him. I think the first two will be the hardest to achieve.

Edit: I have to think we’ll recruit Michigan differently than in the past. Wonder if a guy like Miles Bridges would have been a possibility. I think Izzo will be more worried about Juwan recruiting at home than he was Beilein.

I think it is worth noting that Juwan Howard will become the only African-American head coach in the big 10 which I think is awesome and I think that actually plays a role in recruiting. It should make him more relatable to recruits especially considering his entire story and upbringing. I have a tremendous amount of confidence that Juwan will recruit very well for many reasons.

I thought of that, but assistants do most of the actual recruiting, right?

In a world where DePaul is credited with making kids into pros, I have no clue what matters in recruiting these days.

They definitely do a lot of the leg work and are very involved but in the end the head coach has the biggest impact on recruiting.

Truth is that what a prospect explains in his post-commitment interview is not always what matters.

He made a big deal about something called “Peruball” (a game played at a football camp) where allegedly an attendee was injured and how it was going to be a huge black eye for Harbaugh and the U. Also made a few posts on his website about how Harbaugh had essentially worn out his welcome like 14 months into his tenure and that there was growing support to get rid of him and that no one liked him.

Head coaches do plenty of recruiting. Really depends on how the staff is set up. Generally there’s an assistant who is kind of a point person or primary recruiter but there were many recruitments that Beilein basically just handled by himself as well.

Ok, and it’s hard to see Howard being the “point guy” less than Beilein was. I see how the “I was in your shoes” factor could be a very positive connection.

It’s inevitable that we’re going to take a step back in the areas where Beilein is the strongest. I’m not convinced that roster construction is one of Beilein’s strengths. And while his player development is excellent, I also think a major part of that was his player evaluation. That’s why his recruiting was as good as it was. It surely wasn’t because Beilein loved recruited. I think that held him a back a bit, not just the restrictions at Michigan that Juwan will likely have too.

I don’t think Juwan can successfully recruit a different level of players than Beilein did. Most of the top 10 type players are still going to be off the table. My hope is that he’s able to land more of the guys he really wants than Beilein was able to. I think it’s a reasonable expectation. Maybe he won’t have to rely quite as much on superior player evaluations.

Another reason for optimism is that Michigan sounds committed to giving Juwan more help with support staff. Beilein came from places with less resources than he had at Michigan. He was good at making do. Juwan is used to having more resources for coaches and should be able to take advantage of them.

I’d still love to bring in Cumberland. Good thing he is still waiting to make his decision.

He’s waiting to see if his cousin leaves Cincinnati and stays in the draft, if his cousin comes back to UC that’s where he’ll end up

Definitely reasonabl to think that the offer that might get him to jump one day comes from the region.

Beilein always said he wanted kids that would run through a door to Michigan. While that definitely was not 100% true, Beilein would only go after kids after they showed a serious amount of interest in Michigan. Just look at the mo bamba and Jaylen brown recruitments. Despite both having connections to michigan, Beilein did not go after them until the fall of the senior years after they reached out themselves. I expect Juwan to cast a wider net and not to necessarily be afraid to chase a top kid if they show only lukewarm interest out of the gate in um. Who knows if he’ll get them but I fully expect juwan to chase the best of the best.

Some head coaches are more hands on. I know Xavier’s HC is extremely active himself on the recruiting trail. Usually younger, or lesser known HCs will be more hands on with it early on because they need to make a impression. Guys like Coach K, Calipari, Izzo, Beilein, etc usually let their assistants do much of the leg work and usually come in as “closers” per say to seal the deal.

The Detroit News runs a story every year about the top ten HS senior football players. They ask why they chose the school if they’re committed somewhere, why not Michigan, why not MSU, etc? One kid said he chose Colorado because of a great party there during his official visit. Everyone else gives answers that sound good. You know that some of them had reasons they’d rather not divulge.
