If I am juwan, I am making a run at the hausers
If Beard really is a Texas guy, heāll build a monster in Austin after Shaka spins his wheels a few more years.
Re Few, well, we just donāt know. Whatās the tenure record for an NCAA coach? they get up to 20 years plenty often. 30-35 is another thing. I think itās pretty crazy to assume the guy will spend 35 years in the same job with the same challenges. Like our guy here, or Chris Petersen in a regional football example in the Pac NW, or whomever else, he could very well be seen as unattainable and in a great situation right up to the day he shocks us all with the big move and weāll all pivot to the these guys are nomads/ultimate competitors etc. etc. explanations.
I assume that if he is on board then he is already working the phones and making lots of preliminary decisions.
I think a best case scenario is to find at least two more bodies who are eligible for this season.
Heās going back in time?
Winter 2019 happened and I missed it?
Yeah, another lackluster season for Smart in Austin and heās packing his bags for whatever mid-major or desperate high-major will take him. And Chris Beard will be at his alma mater and will lay waste to the Big XI.
Yeah I thought Winter of ____ implied the date that it turned to winter officially.
His buyout is doubled if he goes to Texas, so youāre not alone in thinking that. Seems like a no-brainer if Smart gets canned soon.
But if Beardās star continues to rise, he could be atop the wish list for any high profile school that might have an opening in the next few years. Would Duke really prefer a coach K progeny?
The thought of a Coach K progeny. . . eww.
I truly believe the current players are ecstatic. I truly do. I can just see Isiahās face when he heard this news. I can see his smile. I can hear his voice. I know X is excited. And I canāt even imagine how stoked JT is, assuming, of course, that āBig Sleepā ever gets truly stoked!
Whatās an example of what you think was ridiculously wrong?
I was thinking that Chris Petersen was somewhat comparable to Few. He turned down one or two good offers to stay at Boise. But he was only their HC for 7 years. And he took the first job offer within the region.
If Few ever does leave, maybe itās to the Trailblazers.
I donāt disagree with your sentiment and I completely get it. I remember growing up hearing about Alabama football but didnāt get it because quite frankly they sucked for the most part during my teenage/college years. That said, I think we probably are undervaluing the role that adults play in these decisions, and the adults these kids are going to be around all remember the fab 5. Iām sure some kids make their own decisions but you know many of the dadās and coaches these kids will be around will be more than willing to tell them stories about the fab 5. As much as anything I think Juwanās 19 seasons and damn near 10 different teams should give him quite a nice network, and the fab 5 endorsement canāt hurt. I have absolutely zero clue if Juwan can run a program since heās never done it, but I will be pretty disappointed if he canāt recruit at a very high level.
Was gonna say this very thing. Scrolled down and you had said it. I love it when Iām thinking what Dylan is thinking!
Any ideas on two bodies that could help and are realistic?
Way too early to say. Depends on the staff, who shows reciprocal interest, etc. Brand new everything really.
You probably start with the names that the old staff was after: Jalen Wilson, Jaevin Cumberland and Franz Wagner. Then expand your board from there.
Has Cumberland been waiting on a decision here or is there something else heās been waiting on? Seems like a decision from him has to come relatively soon.
Mentioned this in another thread but Michigan doesnāt have a coach and his cousin at Cincinnati is testing the draft process. Two big decisions that could shape his choice.
Not sure about how much retaining Saddi Washington would or wouldnāt impact his decision.
I think weāre too close to fairly judge the impact the Fab Five have outside of Michigan fans. Itās easy to go too far in either direction.
They had a huge impact at the time. I traveled a lot around the end of their era. Even in Winnipeg, Michigan apparel was everywhere. It was the only school youād see. In other places, Iād walk into a sporting goods store and Michigan was the second most prominent school behind the big local school.
They werenāt just basketball stars, they were cultural icons. and itās pretty obvious they havenāt been forgotten. Webber, Rose and Juwan are all best known for being part of the Fab Five and they probably always will be.
