It’s pretty much the same boat Shaka is in. Gotta tread extremely carefully if they are in fact interested.
It’s way too late in the process and this guy was never going to be a legitimate candidate, but from a purely basketball standpoint I would have loved to have seen Rick Byrd as an option for Michigan. Hall of Fame level X&Os coach, squeaky clean reputation, many of the same principles and ideals as Coach Beilein. Hired in conjunction with a Coach-in-Waiting assistant (Yaklich or Byrd protege Casey Alexander).
So many reasons why it never would have been seriously considered (chief among them Byrd’s retirement a month ago) but he would have been an interesting, outside-the-box coaches-coach type of hire (much like Beilein).
Love to hear Simpson happy about it. You’d hate to see him be unhappy in his senior season after all that he has given to the program.
Deleted already…
Would love to see that too – where to find?
Edit – never mind, I get it now.
If Manuel pulled Donovan at this stage it’d be like Arya Stark coming out of nowhere to slay that frozen freak.
So what’s the deal with the rumors of Howard landing the job? Fake news? Anyone reputable weigh in yet?
There were what looked like two finalists and it isn’t Cooley. Occam’s razor at play.
All signs point to Juwan right now but nothing appears done yet.
I’m assuming it’s one of those “Done but not done” kind of things and they want to get everything agreed to first.
Yak and Howard…
I know Penny was deeply involved in AAU ball, but if Juwan can hit the ground running anywhere close to what Penny did we will not miss much of a beat after this first transition year.
Any if by chance that Iggy comes back, maybe not any at all.
To think Juwan will hit the recruiting trail like Penny is crazy. Penny coached a Memphis HS team and a Memphis based Nike AAU team. On top of that, Mike Miller funded an AAU organization that he was very involved in.
I’m not saying that he won’t be able to recruit but there’s no way he’s doing the same thing Penny did or is doing.
Id pretty thrilled about that
Spoiler alert man
I’d just like one recruiting win – pull the unlikely and get Wilson or Wagner in, or even the pipe dream of McDaniels, who seems really far-fetched. But it’s also important to get Cumberland solid. I’d assume the goal is still to surround Z/T with three 40%-from-3 guys. It sure would be nice to find a bonus player to recruit at a high level.
I was only kidding. She swung and missed, just like the softball team.
I thought Yak was still in play possibly, as well as Lavall Jordan and possibly Saddi and Shaka even.
If Juwan Howard is the “defensive coordinator” of the Heat, as Dylan’s last post suggests, I’d be shocked if he retained an assistant as defensive coordinator - he likely has a fully formed idea of what he wants his defense to be (like Cooley and the flex).
So my amateur opinion is that Howard would be unlikely to retain Yaklich. Setting aside, of course, the fact that any head coach shouldn’t be bound to active assistants outside their wish.
I think the most practical retention would be Saadi, who has been recruiting Michigan for over a decade.
Why not keep yaklich and align on defense and hand it over so you can focus on offense, recruiting and being a ceo? Yak has wilson connection and burnett. seems to be a stellar recruiter
i could argue saddi coaches big men, which howard already does
if anyone, ive got my eyes on haynes… sanderson, saddi and yak are all keepers imo
