I’m very interested to know Val’s buyout. I would take him over Howard in a heartbeat
totally. The only unchecked box for me is who Juwan will bring as his offensive guru. I am sure that it will not be a disappointment but I am still eager to find out.
Not exactly co-workers, DeFilippo was the AD for the entire 9 years Cooley was an assistant there. That doesn’t mean they had a close relationship, but DeFilippo should have been very familiar with his work.
I’ve already assumed that, sort of. Every time I hear about a prohibitive buyout it’s an invitation to think about what that means for Manuel’s job of replacing an irreplaceable coach who, oddly, didn’t have that kind of buyout in his contract. But I wouldn’t just pin on the blame on Manuel. History has not been kind to his three previous predecessors, so at that point you also have to ponder the bigger picture in which Manuel works.
I am very doubtful that Donovan is a real player in this but either way I think I have convinced myself I would rather have Juwan over anyone which is crazy because Donovan would be an amazing hire as well.
I know the feeling. Hope is a heck of a drug.
It doesn’t explain the meaning of Ulysses either, why does Cooley signing an extension have to explain what has occurred the past 5 days?
I’m also not sure we have “done nothing”?
Apparently y’all are too young to remember the search to replace Carr that felt like it took a decade.
For all we know, he interviewed Washington, Jordan and Smart in that time.
Donovan isn’t a option. IF he was, idc if you like Howard, you gotta go with Donovan if he’s obtainable. He’s way too much of a surefire bet to succeed with flying colors to pass on. Again though, he’s probably not an option. Maybe if this stuff happened next year and Donovan was without a contract it’d have happened.
Ya I agree fully. I have just fallen in love with Howard so much but I definitely acknowledge that Donovan would be the better hire. Like we both said, probably doesn’t matter because he likely isn’t an option.
You have fallen in love with him based on what?
Everything
What has Val done to make you really want him over Howard? Or do you just dislike Howard as a candidate?
You might be right, but I also think Donovan is in a different position as he is already on the hot seat. Cooley knew he could parlay this interest into an extension. If Donovan shows public interest and a deal doesn’t get done the Thunder may say goodbye to him. Again not saying he is a legit candidate but if he were I could see it being less public knowledge than say Cooley or Juwan.
I’m pretty relieved Cooley isn’t coming. I couldn’t imagine our roster next year having to run a flex offense. We might average 50 ppg.
Who thought Warde got played by Cooley? The objection was to him as head coach at Michigan. Not to him getting a raise to stay at Providence.
Every coach uses flex action, Beilein did regularly. But relying on it as your base motion offense, no thank you. But flex action mixed with pick and roll can be a nightmare to defend when used with proper spacing and timing.
I would bet a million dollars that Donovan will not be our coach!
Donovan has already expressed that he isn’t interested per Sam and lobbied for Shaka Smart to be the next coach.
Donovan also was the Orlando Magic Head Coach for something like a week, so it’s “possible” he’s changed his mind over the last week…not saying it’s certain or even probable that he’s back in the Michigan mix, just that it is in his background to change his mind on his career decisions within a week.
So, what Sam and others reported late last week & this weekend could well have been accurate, at that time. And Donovan’s situation could have changed since that time.
