Iffff we were to look for a coach who would be realistic targets?

Just looking at those names and ignoring the current coaching search, where would we have expected Providence to rank? I definitely wouldn’t have said 3rd or 4th. Probably not 5th or 6th either with Georgetown and Seton Hall in the conference too.

JB took over WVU coming off a 19-47 conference record the previous four years. That’s a .288 winning %. The year before, WVU was 1-15. Providence was 6-12, 4-14, 4-14 and 10-8 in the four years previous. That’s a .333 winning %. Not much difference.

The difference for me when looking at this is that JB had some deeper tourney runs to fall back on. Cooley has one NCAA win. JB also had a niche. Elite and unique offensive coach. Cooley has had decent defenses and abysmal offenses despite having solid talent most of his tenure.

Is it possible given the previous connection with Warde and Cooley that this is just a courtesy interview and all this being floated is just “agent stuff” to secure Cooley for a long time and more dollars at Providence? It does seem a little late in the game for all that but a man can hope, right? Please?!?!?!?

I guess one of the question to be asked is how much is Cooley’s buyout? Someone mentioned that it is public knowledge becaue Providence is a private school.

I was definitely surprised to see them ahead of Marquette, Butler and Georgetown. All three of those schools went through a coaching change or two during that six year span that had a negative impact on performance though so it makes sense. I honestly think the “new” Big East is so heavily skewed though with how great Villanova has been.

There’s only 3 programs on the schedule for Cooley that have a winning record in conference play since the new conference alignment. Villanova is the only team to finish kenpom top 10 in that span, and they have done that every year but one. Cooley has never gone better than 11-7 in conference despite playing the majority of his games against average or worse programs + his supposedly great recruiting in comparison to all those teams.

In the Big Ten, Purdue, Michigan, MSU, Wisconsin have all finished kenpom top 10 in that span. Indiana, Ohio State, Penn State, Maryland, Iowa have all finished kenpom top 25 at least once (something Cooley has never done). It’s a gauntlet - not a conference where there’s one elite threat and a bunch of rotating decent teams.

Lol Cooley really played everyone. Not that Michigan fans are upset.

I think it says something that we don’t seem even remotely upset we just got used for a raise.

THANK GOD. Cooley was a joke to consider

It is also quite possible that Cooley was Warde’s contingancy plan since last summer, and he knows that he can get Cooley. But Juwan’s name popped out unexpectedly, Shaka is also available, and some pressure to keep Yak around. Had Beilein taken Piston’s job, Cooley would’ve been a more acceptable choice at the time.

Poor student announcer. Cooley played him like a fiddle.

nice work to get a raise/extension. surprised we haven’t seen more of that already

also why we shoulda offered bennett/wright 6-7 million. to drain other schools of their budgets. especially ones that dont have big football budgets like villanova or uva

Wow. I know Michigan fans are relieved, but now the pressure is on to get Juwan on board. Don’t want this to turn into UCLA.

Hey @chezaroo…now I can still support Cooley from afar and not have to watch his offenses every single game. Win-win for me

This makes the student look a lot better than if Cooley didn’t get the Michigan job or a new contract.

Michigan wanted him, but Providence convinced him to stay is a win for everyone at Providence.

Now I see the reason for Warde to do nothing over the weekend and waited for three days to interview Juwan.

I see your logic there, but that kinda mandates he stick his neck out pretty far.

So Michigan may not end up interviewing a single current head coach that had legit interest in the job…

I am very grateful for Providence. Let’s go Friars!

I’ll be cheering for them as long as Cooley is there.

Naw, this was just Warde’s way of getting his buddy a salary boost.
