Iffff we were to look for a coach who would be realistic targets?

If you get Cooley, Yak wouldn’t be the assistant I’d worry about the most. Cooley has had good defensive teams, he’d have to have someone come in and completely switch his offense and probably run it for him. Without a complete overhaul of his offense the team won’t win a thing

What does being african American and overcoming adversity have to do with anything?

@MoeSWagner - It’s not that I’m worried about defense with Cooley. It’s just that I think Yak is a gifted coach, but not quite ready to be HC. If Yak is on staff, he will be available if Cooley flames out for one reason or another.

It is the difference between the winning % their point differential would suggest and their actual record. IE, a team that outscores it’s opponents by 8 points a game would be expected to have a specific record.

If you’re familiar with Pythagorean record in baseball…

Which, as Dylan mentioned, some of that could be luck and some of that could be poor end of game coaching by Shaka. Hard to say.

any idea who would someone that Howard would bring in as an assist if he were to get the job?

Tons, romeo

Go watch the piece on why Kris Dunn ended up there. It’s about relating to kids.

When you’re Providence, beating teams like Nova, Butler, Geogertown, Marquette, Xavier ect is big.

Guys, this is Providence. List all the silly offensive stats you want, the guy wins games.

There are plenty of limitations at Providence, including coaching and recruiting at Providence

Do you have any concerns with the flex offense? I just don’t think it’s an effective offense for the modern game and his offensive statistics at Providence back that up.

My coach ran a flex when I played in HS and the offense was painful. I have a lot of concerns about that translating in the Big Ten too. You can say Cooley will get better players at Michigan, but Big Ten defenses are better too. I have PTSD from watching Amaker offenses, and while Cooley is a different offense, I am not sure I can stomach a completely inept offense again. As frustrating as Michigan was offensively at times last year, the numbers say it was a signficantly better offense than Cooley has ever had.

Bo Ryan ran the flex and had the number one offense in the country

Points per 100 possessions.

A friend and I were texting about the search today and he asked me of all the rumored candidates, who would I be most/least likely to believe will take a team to the Final Four in the future at any point. I said, in order of most likely to least my picks would be: Shaka, Howard, Jordan, Cooley.

I honestly think Shaka is the only one I would lean thinking would make a Final Four in the future, largely just due to recruiting pedigree alone and willingness to remain a college coach long-term. I am skeptical Howard will stay in college even if he lands the job, and I don’t believe Jordan or Cooley will ever coach a true contender.

Not that this thought process should in any way affect Warde’s evaluation (I’m pulling for Howard personally) but I thought it was a fun way to look at things.

It’s a great offense when run well. When run bad it looks bad. Just like any offense

The modern game is three point basketball and ball screens and the flex doesn’t generate a lot of three pointers or ball screens. It’s a bit archaic and feels like we would be stepping back to a different era of basketball.

Per Dylan’s write up,

Over the last four years, Cooley’s teams finished the year 164th, 100th, 101st and 92nd in adjusted offensive efficiency.

Is it your take that the offense was just run poorly for each of the past 4 years and Cooley would generate significantly better numbers doing the same thing at Michigan?

Ed Cooley in year one + a Simpson and Brooks backcourt sounds like an absolute disaster offensively

Ed Cooley in general sounds like an offensive disaster.

Has it been stated where Manuel’s interview with Howard is taking place tomorrow?

In Florida, I believe. The Big East meetings are going on down there, where Manuel is speaking with Cooley today (and if he wanted to, Lavall). Makes sense that Juwan would be in Florida to meet with Manuel, as well.
