Iffff we were to look for a coach who would be realistic targets?

My thing with Cooley is that he seems to have extremely similar strengths and weaknesses to Shaka, but is on a level below him in them. We know for a fact Shaka can bring in top talent. Cooley has shown potential by getting some Beilein sweet spot level recruits, but not the top tier guys (which isn’t an expectation where he is, just an unknown). Shaka has had better offenses and defenses than him on average. They’re both young. It’s just hard for me to see an argument for Cooley over Shaka, though I’m not much of a fan of either.

On first blush, Cooley would be behind Howard and LaVall Jordan on my wish list…and I don’t think the search should have to go beyond either of those two. But if Cooley were named the next coach, I’d support the program just as much — and there are experts much more tied in to the coaching scene than me who are vouching for Cooley’s credentials :man_shrugging:

So let’s say that the AD goes with Juwan (which i’m totally okay with) is there any chance that at visit to Wilson would sway him back to michigan?

Probably depends on which assistants are on the staff. And probably depends how far along Wilson is in his Decision2.0…if Wilson’s still mulling between 2 or 3 potential options at the time a new coach is named, odds are still possible for UM; but if he’s in the final stages of finalizing his decision, it would be tough for UM to bring him back in the fold.

I think the Texas 247 board insiders were saying that there was a really good chance of Yak going to Texas if he didn’t get the HC job at Michigan.

It doesn’t look like we’re gonna hire him, but I’d assume that would change if we hired the guy that was going to hire him.

I would say: Juwan 60%, Cooley 25%, Smart 10%, Jordan 5%

I wouldn’t have even had Cooley on here if it wasn’t for Sam’s update today.

“It’s the Big East”–and that ain’t no longer impressive, outside of Villanova.

i think Juwan’s first priority is Jaden McDaniels, which plays the same position as Wilson. I think that he has better chance with his nephew. I am more optimistic than Dylan.

I would say, Juwan 60%, Yak 30%, Jordan 8%, Cooley 1%, Smart 1%.

Yaklich isn’t a candidate

yes, Ewing 1.0 has a better record than both cooley and jordan. I would rather gamble with Ewing 2.0

Why do you say that Yaklich isn’t a candidate. He interviewed last week.

It’s been good outside of this past season

He met with Ward as did Saddi, but he’s not an actual candidate, or let’s put it this way hes got around a 0% chance of getting the job same as Saddi

I think he is but barely. Sam has sort of mentioned this. 30% is definitely way too high in my opinion, I wouldn’t put his chances above 3-5%.

Well, then we are all entitled to our opinions. I stick with mine.

@Wolverine3 - nice job of stating the case for Ed Cooley. You did forget something. Cooley is an African-American with a compelling history of overcoming adversity. One could argue that Juwan has done the same thing, except that Juwan is 6’10" and a gifted athlete and that helps smooth the path. Cooley is way more likely to stay 10 years, as compared with Juwan.

If Cooley would commit to keeping Yak on staff for a couple of years, I might be inclined to hire him.

Yes, everyone knew that Poole and Iggy would be testing the waters, And no, no one has said the program is ruined. I said our current situation (with Beilein, Wilson, Poole and Brazdeikas ALL gone) is worse than just about anyone would have predicted a couple months ago.

Do you agree or disagree?

Do explain then what “luck” means in the KenPom world. How is “luck” quantified?
