Iffff we were to look for a coach who would be realistic targets?

I can see your counterpoint happening. I fear the reception for any of the other candidates will suffer because Juwan was passed up. Fans are already unhappy. Maybe Yak would be an exception.

Hadn’t even thought about how much Juwan would tower of over Izzo. Juwan is now my #1 candidate for that reason only.

It is in the pipeline, but sell me on Cooley @Wolverine3

You know what, if Tom Izzo “craps himself from his high horse” because we hired Juwan Howard, that would be a good reason to hire Juwan in itself!

Anyone even remotely connected to the program knew both Poole & Brazdeikis were going to flirt with the NBA Draft and at least one would most likely in the draft — that’s why Michigan continued to recruit the class of 2019. Losing Beilein and potentially losing Wilson is a little bit of a gut punch this late, but let’s see who takes over and the final roster decisions play out before crying over the ruination of the program

That’s not how the metric works at all.

It’s funny, but despite having the riskiest resume, Juwan may be the safest pick for Warde at this point in the process
unless Donovan magically comes back into the process.

The alumni and donor base seems more formed around Juwan — especially those with media access.

He checks every box @umhoops

Built up Fairfield, record improved every year 4 years straight.

4 straight 20+ win seasons at Providence (!)

Lands Top 40-100 kids consistently sat Providence (!) and not just Northeast kids.

Aside from a drop last year, head coaching record is impressive.

Young at 49 years old

Considered an X’s and O’s guy.

Could stick him in a room with Holtmann & Izzo and feel confident.

Yeah Brian Snow keeps calling him and X’s and O’s guy but that doesn’t really seem correct based on watching his teams. I know Dylan would say that. I do think he could blossom at Michigan, but it’d be contingent on overhauling his system. Maybe just recruiting better offensive players would fix it, but I’m not convinced

you’ve sold me enough to check out some of his interviews

when you said good x and o guy, any guess as to why his offensive efficiency not been so great? his defense speaks for itself

No way is he a good x and o guy, here’s his kenpom offensive ratings in the last 4 years

2019-164
2018-100
2017-101
2016-92

Unless he tells Warde he plans to overhaul his offensive system, I am not touching him.

Cooley’s offensive prowess would keep the team from ever winning any of note.

Are you guys missing his W-L record at Prov., in the Big East? It’s Providence
 and he wins.

I checked this out at some point and could’ve sworn every four star kid besides two (who were from Virginia and Carolina) were from New England.

Cooley’s Offensive efficiency ranks
 in the BE

2019 : Last (10th)
2018: 3rd to last (7th)
2017: 3rd to Last (7th)
2016: 4th to last (6th)

Prior 4 years was closer to middle/top of Big East (conference was bigger then)

Admittedly I know very little about Cooley, but as a general statement, there are two ends of the court. X&Os are more than just offense, creating a great defense counts as well
and designing successful out-of-timeout plays and end of game sets to win close contests.

To be fair, his defense hasn’t exactly been killer either. Excluding an outlier first year in the mid 200’s he’s still averaged a 51.3 ranking over seven years.

Good point, certainly seems like he’s viewed as a good x and o coach in the coaching profession. Another thing that could play into that view is that he is really good at coaching the tight flex system but its just not conducive to modern basketball.

Again, I don’t really know Cooley as a coach. Just the arguments for/against an X&Os coach is more than what he/she does on offense.
