Holtman is $3 mm a year. The $7 mm is amortizing his buyout. He is being paid $3 ish.
Agreed full-heartedly with Braeden. Warde (and the culture of the Michigan athletic department) is stupid as hell. The first move of this coaching search should have been to go to Donovan and Stevens with a 7 million per year contract. Make them say no to doubling their salary.
I think youâre right about Holtman, wrong about Donovan. People keep quoting some messed up Wiki page that is using the numbers from Donovanâs Florida contract. He signed a 5 year/$30M contract with OKC.
Should also probably mention that Donovan is on the last year of his deal next year.
you are right, it is about 5-year 30-mil, so about 7m this year.
I am sure Izzo would murder him for even considering UM, but just in general, I am surprised that Dane Fife does not get more looks to be a HC. It would be a risk to hire him at Michigan, but I think he would kill it here, and he wouldnât be any more of a risk than Howard or Yak.
This Mike White love is just ridiculous. His strongest plus is recruiting, and weâre comparing him to Juwan Howard.
Yes, it was a reasonable time to try for him. Stevens has 3 years remaining. The numbers havenât been released afaik. But his original contract expired this season and it was for $3.67M/year. That was considered cheap when he signed the extension so itâs reasonable to think it put him more in line with Donovan.
I donât know why people are convinced that Michigan did not reach out to them. There are reports that they recommended Smart and Jordan. Maybe that was wrong. In any case, if Michigan did reach out they were prepared to pay more than $6M/year.
I donât think Michigan would ever pay a basketball coach 7 million. So any discussion about that is a non-starter. I do agree itâs extremely frustrating that getting a coaching job at Michigan is all about who you know.
Dane Fife is definitely qualified for the job, probably kills it, and owns Izzo. Wouldâve been a brilliant power move. Dan Fife actually promoted Dane on Detroit media but got no traction.
If they ever want a Billy Donovan, Brad Stevens, Jay Wright, etc I would think the money would be in the ballpark of that. If you want the best things you usually gotta pay the most money. Not even speaking of during this coaching search because itâs clear they wonât for this one, but in the future.
Assistants are almost never promoted to major head jobs - they go coach small schools first. The only case I can think of is Greg Gard and that was basically because Bo Ryan jury-rigged his retirement to give Gard a near full-season audition.
Meyer had extensive ties to Earle Bruce.
Paying the most money has basically never been a part of Michigan basketballâs DNA within the U-M athletic department. Just because John Beilein won more games than any other Michigan basketball coach doesnât mean that standing will change as far as AD hierarchy.
I mean, he had been at OSU for two years, gone for 25.
Whatever, yes, he had coached there. It wasnât the basis of his hire.
But generally speaking, great teams stay great/become by spending money. Gotta make smart investments though as well. In Euro soccer there are dozens of examples. In football, and basketball, the teams that pay the most usually have the best coaches and players. Michigan hasnât done that for basketball in the past, but being stubborn and unwilling to adapt just because being cheap worked great in the past (hiring Beilein) doesnât mean itâll work going forward. Especially with as much as things have changed just in the last 5 years. Gotta be able to adapt early rather than too late or it screws you for awhile going forward. And itâs not like Michigan doesnât have the resources to do it either which is moreso where the griping is for me.
Why all this discussion about money? We have as much or more to spend Thant any school. Identify the best candidate and pay what it takes to get them. Money should be the last consideration.
Because historically Michigan hasnât spent a lot of money on basketball.
Tom Izzo .
I thought that Dane Fife is groomed to be Izzoâs successor. Am I wrong?
