Iffff we were to look for a coach who would be realistic targets?

Coach K - $9 mil
Calipari - $8 mil
Holtmann - $7 mil
Self - $5 mil
Izzo - $4.5 mil
Beard - $4.5 mil
Sean Miller - $4 mil

Mike White is not in the same class. The kind of money you are talking about just isn’t the going rate for a guy with his resume.

why does paying a fair rate for a certain quality matter to me? econ major baby!!!

trust me i was all for offering stevens 8-10 mill up front vs a 3 mil “settling” option, but once we got past big fish, i honestly see the potential in howard or yaklich to be a great “budget” option

What exact resume does Holtmann have to justify his salary?

OSU (correctly) identified the guy they wanted and didn’t let budget stop them.

Look, if you want to argue that Manuel has decided that Howard is the best gettable candidate for this job, budget aside, then that’s fine.

It’s amazing that we, as FANS, are going to just mumble about the P&L of the AD over putting out a team we’d enjoy.

I agree Holtmann hasn’t earned that yet and that’s kind of the point, right?

We will see how it goes, but Mike White has averaged 13 losses per season at Florida. He doesn’t deserve more money than any coach outside of K and Cal.

Well it’s my point - hire the guy you think is best. AD money is only going to be used to add a 9th lane to Canham’s pool.

In an ideal world, the money would go to fund scholarships or depress tuition, but we live in idiot-world where we’d rather give sports coaches millions and build multi-million dollar indoor golf training complexes than save kids student loans.

In idiot-world, I at least would rather see a good hoops team than flatscreens in the locker-room.

There are basic economics involved though. If White is only marginally better than your other candidates, it makes more sense to pay half the amount.

Tressel was a cheap hire from a lower division. Meyer was an absolute home run that fell into their laps. They were both from Ohio and Tressel had a lot of connections.

They were essentially OSU’s version of Hoke and Harbaugh when they were hired.

or gasp pay student athletes

Except Hoke and Harbaugh we hired because of their ties to Carr and Bo, Michigan coaches.

Neither Tressel nor Meyer had those. Nor Matta. Nor Holtmann. So…

But why, as a fan, are you supporting a worse coach because it saves a third party - not you -money?

We agree Michigan CAN pay that, right? We agree it will not force the AD to forgo other expenditures, right?

So what’s the point in us, as fans, urging fiscal conservatism? Do we get banners for that?

Argue Juwan is the best hire. Not that he’s the Best Buy.

No other Power 5 school would have hired Tressel. Meyer had a strong tie to Earle Bruce. That’s what led to Zach Smith.

Harbaugh’s connection to Bo was hardly necessary for him to be their top candidate. It made Michigan more attractive to Jim.

Agree, few years ago I went back and counted the McDonald’s all Americans every school had signed through 2002. Um I believe was fifth behind unc, duke, UCLA, Kentucky. I think some have forgotten the recruiting power that um can be. Ed Cooley or Shaka smart will absolutely light it up here. Juwan would to if he is willing to put the needed effort into it.

Manuel will offer $4 million to Howard. But before Howard can sign the contract, Manuel will produce a 25% off coupon and replace the contract with one for $3 million. Howard will accept the coupon and sign. That’s still good money for Howard, and we as fans can celebrate the excellent savings. That’s the only way everyone will feel satisfied when this is over.

I mean, no we can’t agree it won’t force the AD to forego other expenditures. I am not privy to what the AD would do with an extra $3-4 mil/year. Plus, this comes back to who we are talking about. Billy Donovan I’d pay Calipari money. Mike White has only made it past the second round of the tourney one time. Who is to even say that he would be any more successful than Smart, Howard or anyone else? And if you don’t KNOW like you would know with Donovan, why just throw money away?

Plus if it doesn’t work out, the more you pay the guy, the more it would cost to get rid of him.

in Harbaugh’s case, he would’ve not return to coach college had he not so deeply connected to M since a very young age. He could’ve literally pick from any NFL openings at the time. We are lucky to get him not the other way around

Hoke on the other hand was never going to be offered had not he was tied to the program

(Hint: the AD makes millions of profit annually over expenses)

And then they eventually upgrade facilities, which helps with recruiting, which helps with the success of the programs.

If you can only hire good coaches by paying far more than their market rate, you’re not a good AD and your school’s administration will take notice. They might not even approve the contracts.

Lemme just reiterate that I’m fully behind whoever Michigan hires. I personally think Michigan should pay a little extra and it’d be worth it for a Mike White or Prohm over the current favorites, but I also said I’m intrigued albeit nervous about these current favorites being good enough. I think White and Prohm are the safest bets to keep the program in a good spot at the minimum, and if that means paying them 4-7 million a year than so be it from a fan perspective. Especially if they came in and killed it then their contract money would be made up just from the on court successes, increased fan support and sales of basketball gear.

If any of Howard, Jordan or Smart are brought in, or a different coach that hasn’t really been mentioned then I’m getting behind them completely and trust them.

Holtmann’s contract is 28m in 8 years, far below 6m. Ohio State paid him 2 million (maybe twice) up front for the buyout. I assume that Jordan’s buyout is a notch higher than Holtmann’s and Jordan’s probably want a contract similar to Holtmann’s

Donovan’s salary is 3.9m this year, just for the reference. Even If money is unlimited, you don’t over paid. Coach K earned his 7 million for his 30 year excellent service at Duke. I would say Juwan’s package probably is something like 2m per year but i hope that the package for staff is very generous so he can build a strong team around him.
