I thought Garland/Stephens were the heir-apparents to Izzo.
Are you seriously arguing that Harbaugh’s Bo connections were the basis for his?
I’m saying his hire was being clamored for for a decade because he was an alumni.
It’s possible for two things (he was a successful head coach and people focused on him because he was an alumni) to be true at once.
Their proximity to the program was unquestionably the basis of Ellerbe, Fischer, Hoke, Carr, Moeller. Which is not to say they failed.
I’m saying Michigan has a bad tendency to limit its search to people they know. When there is a Harbaugh out there, great. But there rarely is - and there isn’t one here now.
Juwan Howard is an easy move. Sign this man!
@umhoops total speculation, given your experience, is there enough time for howard to get hired and have a shot at all at mcdaniels this late in the game?
I think Michigan is more willing to spend on basketball than in the past. They’ve invested in facilities and the team is good enough to merit it. And Pitino wouldn’t have come cheap when they tried for him. They’re still cheap in they don’t want to pay more than they have to. $7M for Jay Wright, I can see them paying. They understand that makes them money. But if they can’t get a top guy, their budget goes down fast.
I just hope they don’t try to skimp on pay for assistants. It’s one thing when you have John Beilein as your HC. He had a lot of connections and a good eye for assistants. The turnover was probably beneficial. But if it’s Juwan, you should really want to help him out.
I should revise my statement about assistants - Duke assistants get major jobs immediately on the regular, because signing a roster of McDonalds All-Americans to…Northwestern…is a totally transferable skill.
What’s he supposed to be good at as an assistant?
That looks like someone trying to find a narrative that doesn’t fit the actual facts.
Seems like a bit of jumping to a conclusion there. Prohm and White are both in significantly better spots (i.e. it would make less sense for them to be interested in the job). Seems like that’s a bigger similarity than minority or not.
No clue. Obviously it is very late in the game and McDaniels focus has been (from what I understand) on Kentucky and Washington. Probably depends how strong Howard’s relationship is there and the specific mechanics of McDaniels recruitment.
Don’t hold your breaths on McDaniels. He’s been basically down to those 2 for awhile even though it just recently got named public. Its possible but odds are slim to land him imo.
Dane Fife? always hard to evaluate the contribution of an assistant, but Valentine and Winston were the MVP Izzo had lately. I thought Dane will take over if Izzo retires now, but I could be wrong.
I actually hope that’s true. It’s not my conclusion, but something that came from elsewhere.
Yeah wasn’t responding directly to you the message wouldn’t let me not directly respond to you. Was speaking towards the rest of the forum but I think it directed towards you for some reason. We were on the same page though.
I agree we should make a guy like Jay Wright an offer he can’t refuse.
Harbaugh is a bad example, though. He was not in a great spot in SF, he was in the process of being fired.
Who would we pay though?
I think every single guy that is looked upon as better than the original options has already rejected us, or have been rumored to have no interest. It’s almost a guarantee that even the people who have followed the search the closest don’t know everybody Warde has reached out to.
The current candidates aren’t an indication of Warde’s favorites, they’re an indication of what’s left on the market.
the more the search drags on, the window for any last minutes recruiting narrows … I am baffled why they will have to wait to Tuesday …
