So if you in Warde’s position would you rather pay $3-5 million a year for Lavall Jordan or Juwan Howard than $5-7 for Mike White or Steve Prohm? It’s a no brainer what I’m deciding when I see that.
I think we have to be careful in believing vague info. We know for sure that Juwan has an interview coming up. That’s all I’m confident in. Everything else is either speculation or third hand info, even if the source we’re hearing from is respected.
It just could be that Jordan’s name is persistent because he’s an obvious candidate. Someone even reported who his assistants we’re going to be, as if anyone could know that but LaVall. We’re not hearing about White or Prohm, but it could be because no one is leaking info they don’t wan’t to get out.
In Warde’s place I wouldn’t want it out as gives their current schools a chance to work on keeping them. I want to make a take or leave it offer with candidates ready to decide. Not get used as a bargaining chip or get involved in a bidding war.
I’ve been skeptical about names like Cooley when the reason given is a connection to Warde. Warde’s not talking. It just sounds like people come up with a semi-plausible name, someone suggests a reason it might be true and suddenly we have multiple sources.
I won’t be shocked if Juwan is the only candidate interviewed. Yes, I know Yak might have had an interview yesterday, but it’s hard to know for sure what it was about. Maybe LaVall gets a courtesy interview. It might be good for his rep, supposedly Beilein recommended him and I guess it looks like due diligence. Having said all that, I can picture Michigan wanting LaVall because they think he’s the safest choice. I agree though, it doesn’t make sense to pay a big buyout for him.
Just my opinion, but I think Michigan wants to pay around $4M. They would pay Saddi or Yak less, but they don’t want the price tag too low. It doesn’t look good now there are quite a few coaches in the $4M range. Almost no one is getting $6-7M. I just don’t see Michigan willing to pay it unless it’s for somebody that could command it elsewhere.
I don’t think Michigan should try to hire someone who’d do the same thing Beilein did or try to replicate him. Keep the core things like not being slimy and being classy but go about recruiting and style of play differently. It almost never works trying to just keep doing what the last guy did. Just look in the Big Ten at Gard and Wisconsin. I think Michigan should try to get a new identity rather than copying what is in the past.
Michigan BB has had many storied teams and a pantheon of great players before the Ed Martin debacle.
Of course it was going to take time to recover from that issue and get the facilities upgraded to where they are now.
We now can compete with almost any Blue Blood when it comes to facilities, and the M name along with the Jordan brand gets you into 90% of potential future recruits homes.
There is a strong potential that the new man will recruit at a much higher national level than JB had done previously.
Let’s give this “unknown” a chance to see what he can do with all of the intrinsic advantages a Michigan profile can offer.
This doesn’t apply as much in basketball. Kids looked at Beilein and knew he was a elite developer but that didn’t mean they wanted to come to Michigan often. Especially the top 50 type players. In a ideal world it would but It don’t usually. Under Beilein Michigan did hang with the Blue bloods on the floor but it wasn’t because of recruiting. It was because of Beilein developing. Michigan’s new facilities are also great but the general consensus from high end recruits I’ve talked to is they aren’t better than a lot of these schools. They are comparable or close but not outright better usually. The Jordan brand doesn’t usually draw kids in like you’d think either. It’s a sweetener but not something that turns the tide when deciding. The most important factor more than anything is the coach.
I agree. I think hiring LaVall would be a mistake. It’s just one I could see them making if the price is not too high. LaVall could so easily be stuck in Beilein’s shadow.
Outside of Beilein and Rich Rodriguez nearly ever Michigan AD hire had answered 1 question:
“Well, who do we know?”
If Blanchard and Howard are the candidates, we can see things haven’t changed.
Believe me, if our new coach can’t recruit nationally with the M profile behind them, they’re a slug.
4-5 star recruiting will inevitably pick up post JB. Believe it.
Agreed. Which it appears to be true as of now with limited info sadly.
Blanchard???
yes i’d pay juwan 3 mil vs paying white or prohm 7 million
nba assistants make what 300k to a million? triple his pay raise, keep current staff as much as possible, bump yak up to 400 k. juwan’s first gig, plenty of motivation on his end to prove himself, at a school he loves
would i take white at 5 mil vs juwan at 5 mill? then it comes down to an interview.
Lol wrong Michigan basketball affiliated Lavall
Why? It’s not my money or yours. The school’s AD doesn’t give the balance to educational scholarship and just uses it to build more sports buildings. Pay the best guy. White is unquestionably safer than Howard. That doesn’t mean he’s interested.
i wouldnt pay anyone but stevens, donovan, wright or bennett that much (from our list). not good business to write blank checks and over pay people
It ain’t a business. Well, it’s not supposed to be.
I agree. I might add Beard.
7 mill is top 5 money in college hoops coaching. are prohm and white top 5 coaches?
This nonsense drives me insane. Ohio State has paid a succession of the best guy available for years now - Tressell, Meyer, Matta, Holtmann. None had ties. And aside from Matta’s health-related decline, has shown results for having done so.
We keep thinking that we’re a special snowflake comprehensible only to people who have been here before.
Why does it matter to you?
