Iffff we were to look for a coach who would be realistic targets?

now that wilson is gone we now have 3 open scholarships potentially 4 who do we target now?

I’m hoping the new coach, whoever it is, was a strong recruiter and can bring some guys to Michigan right away.

It looks like Michigan is going to hire a coach in their 40s. I’m not looking at any of them as a finished product. Their personalities are pretty much set, but their coaching knowledge base is far from it. Any of the realistic candidates is going to have to learn and adapt to be successful here.

Is someone less proven, with more to learn a better bet than an established coach of the same age whose flaws are known? That’s a judgment call that we’re paying Warde to make. It’s worth remembering that Beilein left Michigan a better and different coach than when he arrived. He learned something seemingly every time he hired new assistants. And he obviously came in with more experience than anyone we’re talking about.

Recruitment really is a compelling argument for Smart. He can at least do that, assuming it translates from Texas. I hate the idea of saving a coach from himself with coordinators, but it’s clear that Michigan could very well do worse.

Sorry, but that is just asinine. If Warde truly believes that we are a “football school” and that the next basketball coach needs experience in dealing with that then we are 100% screwed and the hoops program is about to be sent back to the late 1990’s in a Delorean.

In reality summer semester for incoming freshman starts next month. If the hire doesn’t happen for at least another month how is he going to have any time to recruit anyone?

I think it’s stupid as well, but Michigan is a football school. Just not a very successful one.

I don’t know what Warde truly believes, but you can look at the actions – knew Beilein was actively looking to leave; didn’t bother communicating a plan to his assistants until the Wojbomb. Was busy touring around with the football team.

Gotta love the fat jokes coming in. This place is degrading to normal message board standards.

Michigan is a “football school”, but explicitly trying to find people who have coached at football schools as a major criterion is hilariously stupid.

maybe we need to hire a new AD before a basketball coach.

Yeah the UMHoops board has been primarily above the normal message board nonsense, but people are losing their minds with this coaching search.

We need to identify players who have experience playing basketball at a football school.

It’s not what he believes. It’s what is reality.

The reality is that football IS the bigger and more attractive program and receives more money and attention. I would have a problem if Warde operated as if basketball wasn’t important. This is not what is being implied.

Again, it’s legitimate criteria to want your coach to be able to handle your school being objectively a football school, as Brian mentioned that there is a big difference.

So Sam thinks Nate Oats would come if offered. Is Oats that good a coach?

It’s also believed that Nate Oats would only come if he was straight up offered the position, since he won’t accept an interview.

I personally don’t like him very much. He has a small sample size at Buffalo and I think I remember hearing concerns regarding character too, whether it’s because of recruiting, or the fact that he promised Buffalo to be back and left anyway.

I think Oats has a bit of a dirty rep going back to his days at Romulus.

Just making deductions from a quick sweep of the boards, it looks to me as though–barring introduction of additional names–it COULD be down to Shaka Smart and Juwan Howard. I just watched an interview with Smart and have to confess that he’s brighter than I thought, so bright that his cool way of dealing with interviewer BS was, for me, downright impressive. I can also see how he might do far better in the Midwest than he is doing in the, aherm, South.

I could, in other words, approach a Smart hire with an open mind. Would still prefer a roll of the dice on Juwan. Both men, in my opinion, are soft-spoken and thoughtful enough that they will immediately annoy the segment of the fanbase that likes the brash Caliparis of this world–they will be vulnerable to a certain kind of criticism for not being aggressive enough. F 'em.

For people obsessed with the search I have a strong if obvious recommendation: go out and dig up interview footage of the names that interest you, including those you mistrust. Put on your BS detector and watch with an open mind. You might be surprised at what you find.

Would very much prefer Juwan.

It does look like Juwan vs. Shaka
