Iffff we were to look for a coach who would be realistic targets?

Apparently some Nike big shot talked about it when Michigan returned to Nike, and that Calipari would be interested.

I brought up the buyouts but as someone pointed out those are for the school to buyout the coach. So if wichita state wanted to get rid of Marshall thats what they would owe. Just looked and he actually has a very small buyout. And we were paying Beilein 3.8 million so no reason we can’t pay a little more to get a guy like Marshall. Billy Donovan’s name has been tossed around a lot as of others who are high profile. None of them are coming for less than 4 or 5 million or more.

Looking at some old articles, it sounds like Marshall’s end of the buyout is somewhere in the $200-500k range? Which in the terms of modern booster clubs, is not a determining factor.

Thats the same number I saw as well. Would be a non factor should we want to go after him.

If Michigan hires a coach who does not have a track-record or winning at a D1 program, I think most would/should consider it a failure. The assistant promotion is just cheaping out.

I’d make an exception for Howard who is at least an NBA lead assistant.

3 of the guys on that list (Rhoades, Smith, Nagy) have better resumes than Moser.

I would encourage people to go and dig up some interviews with him. An appealing and thoughtful guy. And as I said here earlier, a hell of a lot of parents would be thrilled to have him recruit their kids.

Donovan is still the likely leader if interested. But I think Juwan or LaVall would be fine stewards of the program. There definitely would be a lot of excitement around the program if Juwan got the gig — and a lot of eyeballs on the program, likely an expanded TV broadcast schedule, too.

Michigan’s tv schuedle will be unaffected by Juwan Howard

CBS & Fox/FS1 would have much more interest in selling storylines (and ratings) with Fab5er returns home…they’d schedule the maximum games they could. So, yes, Howard back at UM would increase the TV exposure.

And his highlights would be prominent on SportsCenter and other digital outlets. More so than any other coaching candidate (including Beilein if he was still coaching). Storylines still sell in the media and Howard — with Jalen, King, and Jackson courtside — would sell for the media.

You meant Frieder. :grinning:

Not a warm fuzzy guy. And he has a great situation at WSU.

Juwan; sorry, I thought my response was a reply.

If we don’t hire a good coach because he’s not warm and fuzzy… that’s how you end up with Moser. Is Harbaugh warm and fuzzy?

Yes, you’re absolutely right! I was talking about Johnny Orr in the first paragraph, in answer to a question about him being a Michigan man, and I continued to refer to Orr in the second paragraph. I’m pretty old and sometimes this old brain gets confused! Thanks for the reminder!

In fact my entire second paragraph was screwed up. Yes, of course it was Bill Frieder who left in 1989 and he left for Arizona State, not Iowa State. Orr left Michigan for Iowa State in 1980. I never understood at the time why he left when he did. Either of them, really.

I’m sure Frieder intended to coach Michigan in the 1989 NCAA Tournament, saying he would leave at the ā€œend of the season,ā€ but Bo said, ā€œI want a MICHIGAN man coaching Michigan,ā€ and Steve Fisher, who had been Frieder’s assistant, would coach Michigan in the tournament. As upset as we all were at the time, Michigan went on that amazing run and won the National Championship. Sometimes out of adversity, good things happen.

Frieder DID attend the University of Michigan, Fisher did not. Nor did Bo. This all started with a discussion about the last coach at Michigan, prior to Harbaugh, of course, who was a ā€œMichigan man.ā€

I believe, other than Frieder, the last Michigan grad to coach basketball at Michigan was Dave Strack. I’m old, but that’s as far back as I go!
