Brey I totally get. But I’d be shocked if White wouldn’t even consider jumping with the right offer.
Remember how JB wanted kids who want to come to Michigan? Well, I want somebody who WANTS to come to Michigan. Having said that, I would hope if we wanted White, that he would want us.
Sports reporters have to write stuff to make a living! They don’t write stuff, their families don’t eat.
I think the key is to sign the best coach who will sign a contract. Not the coach who most wants to sign a contract.
Frieder had a really bad relationship with Bo. I read a good article about it but can’t remember the source. Basically, Frieder was too kooky and eccentric for Bo’s taste. On the other hand, Frieder said if he had known that Bo would retire the following year, he would have ridden it out and stayed at UM.
The whole “Michigan Man” thing started with that press conference following the Frieder firing. I have a huge soft spot for Frieder since I started following UM hoops in 1987.
His player development actually is proven. His biggest responsibility has been developing the big men for the Heat, particularly Whiteside and Adebayo. Whiteside went from a G-League project to one of the league’s top rebounders and defenders. Adebayo started coming into his own the last month of this season, which he credits Howard for, and he averaged 12 PPG and 9.3 RPG in just under 27 MPG.
The fact Howard rose to the rank of top assistant so quickly on a staff that also includes longtime member Dan Craig speaks volumes about his Xs and Os. Spoelstra invested lots of confidence in him and so did Pat Riley. Those are two great coaches who trust Howard greatly. I’ll take their word on it.
Here’s the documentary discussing the 1989 run.
Frieder was an interesting guy. He was brilliant, probably a genius (what Michigan grad isn’t? ), banned from Vegas for “counting cards.” He was a great recruiter. Had that towel over the shoulder. You are right, he was definitely NOT a Bo kind of guy!
I dunno. White is from Florida. SEC is pretty big time.
Maybe he just has no interest leaving where he is comfortable.
Didn’t realize he was also from Florida. That’s a great point.
Yeah, in fact his entire college playing and coaching career has been in four states, all in the (deep) south: MS, AL, LA, and FL.
@umhoops will this be the first season of UMHoops.com without John Beilein or did it start before him?
IIRC, Dylan mentioned that he started UMHoops during JB’s first season. So yeah, this would be UMHoops 2.0 in that regard.
Found the blurb from his “Five thoughts” article:
This website was born into existence early in John Beilein’s first season at Michigan
Yep. Will be strange to say the least. Maybe I need to start a Cavs site.
I guess much of it depends on how he landed those five star recruits this year and whether he thinks his tactics would pass muster at Michigan. No idea either way.
Also, Bo didn’t care for the way Frieder ran his program. The extra benefits didn’t start with Ed Martin.
This Frieder is a Genius Cardcounter stuff is BS generated by the Bill Frieder PR machine.
I have an old golfing buddy who I worked with who graduated from High School with Frieder. He said he was 6th in his graduating class and Frieder was like in the 20’s. He said Bill used to cheat off him in Math class in high school. My pal is a UM Engineering grad like me. He said Frieder thought Engineering at UM was too hard.
In 1976 Bill was also supposedly a coaching genius and did all of Johnny Orr’s coaching. Where was the genius with his talented late 1980’s teams? Bill did do most of Johnny’s recruiting. Johnny liked spending time on the golf course.
Bill was a sharp, kooky, caffiene addicted work-a-holic. Genius, please.
what are peoples thoughts on cooley? looks like he has had some success at a couple of tougher jobs… seems defensive oriented, his offenses have been mediocre at best
sounds like he and warde have some ties
Sounds like Frieder combined his great love of cheating with occupations and activities that could result with him receiving money. Given the nature of today’s college basketball, that’s precisely the kind of man we need now.
If Warde likes him because he (Warde) used to kick it in the same geographical region as Cooley then I am not feeling very confident about this coaching search.
Good recruiter, solid defenses, U-G-L-Y offenses (none better than #30 (2014) and none in the top-100 since 2016’s #92).
