Iffff we were to look for a coach who would be realistic targets?

Damn that qualifies

We’re not touching Bryce Drew with a 10 foot pole.

who’s the last ā€œmichigan manā€ that coached the basketball team, if there was ever anyone?

Well, according to Bo, Steve Fisher was.

Well, Frieder was the last guy that actually went here.

Johnny Orr, maybe? I think he was at least the last one to retire here.

The realities of big time roster turnover is challenging for all.

I think Johnny originally went to Univesity of Illinois and transferred to Beloit College. He was a 6’3 forward. Times have changed.

Of course after Orr left Michigan to go to Iowa State In 1989 Bo famously said, when he appointed Steve Fisher as Michigan’s interim coach for the NCAA Tournament, ā€œI want a Michigan man coaching Michigan!ā€ The rest is history!

Let’s just hire the #1 recruit in the country’s dad to a one year deal, keep Yaklich, Saddi and Haynes as assistants, and rinse and repeat for the next 10 years

Man, I hope you are joking with that Bryce Drew stuff!

Orr didn’t retire here - he left for Iowa State.

Forgot about that. Good grief! Osterbaan? Guess we haven’t really had one in basketball.

Very legitimate concern. His player development is still unproven. Might be good at it, might not. In theory concerns could be mitigated some were he to hire a strong teaching staff and serve more as ā€œprogram CEOā€ … but concerns like that are valid.

Personally, I would make the obligatory call to Stevens (99.999% sure it would be a No) and then move on to more reasonable options. Take a heat-check on Donovan’s interest. I’d make a call to Mark Few (don’t expect it to go anywhere). After that Juwan and LaVall Jordan would be in my range, perhaps with Gregg Marshall. Moser, IMO, isn’t the disaster some on here are making him out to be, but I’d be a little happier with Juwan or LaVall.

The next coach will likely be a worse talent developer. Beilein was insanely strong in that area.

But outright pure talent can make that difference less of a problem.

Plus Juwan could be an excellent tactician and worked with Spoelstra (who is a very good coach).

Howard being bandied about reminds me that Spolestra seems like he’d be an excellent college coach, though obviously he’s Riley’s guy and won’t be under pressure there even though they missed the playoffs.

Do we know what kind of coach Howard would be? Tactically.

Yeah I’d take Spoelstra in a heartbeat, but he is Riley’s protege.

Yeah it’s really weird how we can’t have a coach stick around to retirement. At least this time our coach is leaving for a pro job and not a lateral (if that) move like Orr and Frieder made.

Did I miss when we talked about this?

Whats the reason Gregg Marshalls name hasn’t come up more? Of the more established coaches mentioned he feels like one who is attainable but maybe I’m wrong. I would put myself firmly in the lots of doubt with Lavall Jordan camp. I’m not sure what he’s done at either stop to make anyone too excited. If we’re going former assistant route I think I would take my chances with Yaklich first but thats just my two cents.

On a side note, as good a talent developer as Beilein I also think he was a great scout and understood the importance of finding the right mix of guys.

Marshall is clearly a good coach but I saw on the USA Today salary list that he makes $3.57 million and has a $15 million buyout so I’m guessing that’s why his name hasn’t come up more.
