Iffff we were to look for a coach who would be realistic targets?

I’m not sure why everyone is so excited about the possibility of having Juwan Howard coach the team. Regardless of the fact that he’s being interviewed for NBA head jobs, he’s never been the head coach at any level of basketball. I think it would be a huge risk to pick him.

may i argue that Juwan is much more ready than Yak and likely recruit better in short terms. what if he brings in Jaden McDaniels

There is a huge difference between having a huge booster network (see Alabama, Clemson, USC, etc.) actively “courting” recruits with money, and some rogue financial advisor paying kids so they will sign with him once they turn pro.

The latter has nothing to do with a specific school, and usually involves fairly small amounts of money. The former is the Cam Newton situation.

I’m extremely confident Michigan is not involved in the former.

Do I think Michigan players get free stuff all over Ann Arbor? Undoubtedly. Have a few of them probably taken money from an agent, or someone else, from time-to-time without the knowledge of the school or coaching staff? I’m sure it happens.

Does the Athletic Department crack down on violations? Yep.

How would you rank these 3 options: Yak as HC, Howard as HC with full staff discretion, Howard as HC with Yak either directly or indirectly forced upon him as lead assistant

2x NBA Champ
2x Final Four
19 years in NBA
6 years coaching under Spolstra/Riley
Lakers, Knicks, Timberwolves considering him
Member of most prolific recruiting class ever

The resume is hardly blank, but would be a leap of faith

Howard as HC with full discretion on staff. I assume that he has no baggage and will be open minded when evaluating who will best serve on his staff.

yes would love part/all of staff to stay on for continuity and work with Howard. Think we could really keep the ship steady in that scenario

plus with Howard, we would surely learn how to feed Teske in the post

That quote would apply to a lot of star coaches, like Tony Bennett and Jay Wright.

It would basically only not apply to the coaches at blue blood schools like UNC, Duke, UK, KU, and the like. Very few other schools land many five star kids. Arizona, I guess. We’re obviously not targeting Sean Miller.

I am not for or against Howard, but surely worth a call to see if he has any interest in coaching college basketball and Michigan.

Howard as coach with Yak as an assistant is very intriguing. A million times better than Moser. I would take that so long as it is Howard’s idea, or he thinks it’s his own idea. I would understand if Yak or Howard were not okay with that.

Howard and Yak would be a top-three choice IMO.

Juwan will be a safe bet for Warde. It will sit well with most of the fanbase and brings some excitement to the program early on. Juwan inherit a fairly solid roster and with some success in recruiting, could keep the program at a fairly high level in the next three seasons even if he may not break through, it is unlikely that the program will fall onto the earth. I believe that eventually Juwan will be back to NBA but as many said, more options will be there after 3-4 years.

Gotta think Juwan’s name power could make him a big time recruiter, which can cover initial coaching weaknesses.

Yes and I believe that Juwan is a better tactician than many people expect from him.

Howard would be a potential plus in recruiting but not sure extra recruiting to make up for player development losses is a direction that Michigan basketball can sustain with longevity

get juwan in here, land mcdaniels or wagner/cumberland, have a solid year and a decent recruiting class with guys we already on and its off to the races

McDaniels? As in Jaden McDaniels? Does Juwan Howard have some kind of super tight relationship with him or something? Because if not then yeah that’s unfortunately not happening.

Edit: he does!
