Iffff we were to look for a coach who would be realistic targets?

thank you!

I stand corrected, you’re right I had the wrong list/buyout terms. The numbers you quoted are much lower numbers which it more palatable to steal a guy like Beard away (although I know this won’t happen). Even at the lower numbers having a buyout clause would have been money that roughly cancel out a hire from another school.

I’d take 3-4 good years of Juwan Howard if he was hired then he does so well that NBA head coaching jobs are on the table for him and he leaves than a decade of solid not Beilein level coaching or worse from someone else. If Howard came in and had a few very good years it’d make the job even more appealing down the road.

Besides the obvious of potentially losing Wilson and Bajema (and having no time to replace them), not getting any transfers (Cumberland), and losing out on Franz, and Iggy not returning, does anyone know anything on current guys and what they’re feeling? I realize it’s early and no coach has been announced but wondering if there have been any rumblings from current guys.

Also, how much would hiring Yaklich help with any and all of the above?

I don’t think there should be a timeline announced. That just boxes yourself in and makes you look bad if you don’t meet the “deadline”. Hire the best guy whenever you can.

i disagree, there needs to be a timeline for recruits. This is prime time for recruiting, if potential recruits and our already commits need a timeline set in stone to make some major life impacting decisions. It needs to be relatively quick.

Did JB have literally no buyout at all? I agree that would be odd if true.

I wonder if Warde has contacted (not sure what is allowed) our current commits to discuss his urgency. I think they would want to hear from him if possible.

I am seeing some contradictory information on this. Some places are saying this is after the first year. Did you see more definitive info on this someplace?

According to the Detroit News he did not…

According to the contract details, if Beilein opted to leave Michigan anytime before April 15, 2023, he was required to provide “reasonable advance written notice of the termination of his employment.” He won’t be required to pay a buyout.

Hearing some sources say reasonable notice was put at 60 days but don’t know if that’s official. If it is this doesn’t sound like it was 60 days.

Yep. And maybe someone like Yak, Saddi Haynes or Jordan are proven HC by then. Or there will be a wider pool of candidates.

OSU getting Chris Holtmann when they did was a major coup. I’m hoping we can do something like that if Donovan and Howard say no. But idk who could be our Holtmann.

Beilein has done so much for Michigan that they may have just said “screw it you are off the hook John. Thank you for everything.” I could definitely see that. I think that was the fair thing to do too personally. He completely changed the program. Can’t fault him for wanting a shot at the NBA especially this late in his career. If he’d have left for another college then I think Michigan would’ve made him pay the buyout if it was true.

timing of all of this happening could not be any worse, so sad if we lose our 2019 class commits

Getting this hire right is significantly more important than any recruits that were planning on coming to Michigan.

I mean you obviously want to be in communication with the recruits and tell them you’ll wrap it up ASAP. But I don’t think it’s a good idea to set an arbitrary deadline for yourself. Then you look really bad if you miss it.

A basketball program can be rebuilt faster than a football program. Bajema and Wilson are not irreplaceable. So long as we don’t enter the season with 10 or less scholarship players we should be alright for this season.

lets pump the breaks on sky is falling, timing is the worst, recruits are leaving

lets just see how things play out first. worse timing would be anytime between now and next january

Agreed. In 3-4 years you have more info LaVall Jordan as a Head Coach, more info on Yaklich as a coach (HC or Asst), more info on Patrick Beilein’s coaching trajectory.

If the biggest knock on Juwan is that he’s “too hot” a coaching commodity to stay long-term, I’d take a short-term successful run and figure my options out down the line.

It wouldn’t preclude me from having Juwan be a candidate, and I agree I’d gladly take some short run success but I do think it’s a consideration. That all said, just because he’s a hot commodity in coaching circles doesn’t mean he’s a proven candidate. If you told me we could have Brad Stevens for just 3 or 4 years I’d ask you where do I sign. But an unproven Juwan versus an unproven Yaklich I think is a little different scenario. And a worst case scenario would be pulling a Lavall Jordan at UW Milwaukee (bad year and then leave). Like I mentioned before I would still prefer Juwan over some names I have heard, but if it comes down to two similar candidates I would prefer the one you think will be here the next 12 years like JB was. If that other candidate doesn’t exist then by all means let’s start the Fab 5 reunion now.
