Five thoughts on Michigan hiring Juwan Howard

I think you will see Yak at Texas.

Gotta think this plays into Michigan’s favor, right? There are question marks, but one of Howard’s strong suits is almost certainly going to be recruiting. If he can lock in a solid class early on, that should help build momentum elsewhere too.

Hard to say. Here’s Abdur Rahim’s POV:

In that context, it would be bad for us, but hopefully other guys are willing to take the leap.

It’s probably too early to tell either way. I’m just excited that the search is done and Warde took a gamble on what could be a home run hire.

a smart kid I have to say, he wants to see how Juwan runs this team and how he will fit in.

Well, we were this close to hiring Ed Cooley.

Yaklichs wife also retweeted the recent announcements made about Howard being named head coach. I’m sure the financial security of a head coaching job like this is extremely appealing and perhaps a tough pill to swallow for her at least initially. We’ll see how it all plays out.

Edit: I couldn’t get her RT to post right but click on her profile link above.

Anyone think Bacari Alexander is a candidate to return to this staff as an assistant?

why would he be?

No thanks.

Obviously the biggest question mark with Howard is that he’s never coached before. I recently looked at a list on the Detroit News of former NBA guys who were coaching in college or at least were recently. The results were mixed as expected. What was interesting though is guys like Mike Dunleavy with significant NBA experience did awful in college and Avery Johnson never really took Alabama to the next level. I have no idea how you would measure it but it would be interesting to see success/failure rates of guys with and without head coaching experience (but prior assistant experience).

his record developing bigs under Beilein was not remarkable at all. Saddi was a big upgrade.

I’m shocked. I’m not sure what this says about college basketball. It’s more important to hire someone who has ties to the NBA than a someone with college coaching experience. Iggy and JP leave even though they are probably 2nd round picks. I’m probably overreacting and NCAA may not want to change but college bball is changing quickly.

It would be funny if Juwan called his former UM teammate and used family connections to poach the top assistant off Izzo’s staff :joy:

He also outdoes Beilein in career losses at Michigan!

Just saw this. Hope that she isn’t burning a bridge for her husband. Surely she is big enough to understand that there might have been a number of people–including Lavall Jordan–who thought themselves worthy contenders. And to get that Juwan’s bona fides of decades might carry more weight than Yaklich’s worthy but short-lived accomplishments at Michigan? Tweet seems. . . somewhat regrettable from several viewpoints, not least her/their own.

Jalen Wilson thinks a lot of Juwan Howard so you can’t say he definitely would not recommit.

Wilson committed to Beilein not Yak. Retaining Yak might improve all chance but i don’t know by how much.

Sounds like it would have a decent impact

Jalen Wilson tells MLive that he expects Juwan Howard -- if he is in fact U-M's next coach -- to reach out, visit his house, and lay out his vision.

Keeping any or all of the current assistants would go a long way for Wilson, as he got to know them well during recruiting process

She didn’t make the tweet. She just liked it. It was complimentary to her husband.
