Five thoughts on Michigan hiring Juwan Howard

I get that it’s disappointing for him and his wife that he isn’t getting the job but take the high road on social media. He’s been a high level assistant for two years so I think it’s a great step for him that he was interviewed for a position like this. He should reasonably expect to have to prove himself as a head coach before being handed the keys to one of the top 10 jobs in the country.

Before we attack him, let’s just keep in mind that there’s no proof or even indication that anyone but his wife has this thought process. Many insiders have said that a great pitch from Howard would keep him here.

Quite the curious point in light of whom has been hired.

Gotta love people saying someone else they have never met in their life and have no idea what is going on in their head other than one like their wife had on Twitter, that they are losing perspective. Please enlighten Yak for us.

All I said was they were probably disappointed in not getting the job and should take the high road on social media. What’s wrong with that?

I would LOVE Coach Yaklich to stay on staff — if Juwan thinks he’s the right fit for his staff. But think of this from a human standpoint, though. He interviewed for a job he legitimately wanted and was passed over — there has to be a disappointment factor now that reality is setting in. Some of that could be manifesting itself in initial reactions by his family. It’s human. Let’s see how he feels in 2, 3, 7 days.

If Yak did interview for the HC position, then his dream was within reach. I’m sure there were times where it seemed like it could actually happen. Can’t blame him or his wife for being disappointed, or having a laugh about it. I say we wait to see how it unfolds. It’s hard to conclude that Yak would feel bitter about not getting the job–but I’m sure it’s kind of tough to process right now. I’d be devastated.

Let’s see what happens in the next few days. I love Yak, wanted him for the job really. I think he’s a unique coaching talent. But, anytime you get passed over for a job stings.

Moreover, Yak would be the defensive coordinator under a coach whose primary expertise has been coordinating defenses. There must be some concerns on Yak’s part when trying to determine how much autonomy he’ll have.

Not talking about you haha. My bad

Ok! Carry on!

@umhoops listened to the miles pod, doesn’t sound like he wants to coach this year but definitely would be a great one year rental

Juwan has a BIG opportunity with this first year. Abdur-Rahim has already said that he wants to see how Michigan performs this year.

There are the pieces there be a top 25 team next year. If Juwan can put it together and have a positively buzzy season (ranked team, win an average amount of big games, 1 or 2 tournament wins), then we can knock the 2020 class out of the park and Michigan we should be able to get rolling. Opportunity for a top 5 class there based on the buzz around the hire (and the size of the class).

I think that aspect is overblown. As a first time coach Juwan will have a lot on his plate in a hurry. If Yaklich and Juwan sit down and talk strategy and Juwan is comfortable with Yaklich’s vision for team defense, Juwan could be happy to off-load that responsibility and focus on other aspects of the job (maybe it frees up more time for him to focus on a position group like the post players?)

I think it’s also worth noting that Yak would be in a similar situation at Texas under Smart, but with less job security given the relative hot seat there. I agree with you here. It really depends on fit. Yak’s autonomy was unique in college hoops. He probably loved it. Any change will be hard for Yak, but if we’re matching pay for any other job–it might just be a pill he’s willing to swallow.

Miles would never take the job because he’d be losing a lot of money. He’s still owed over $2m in monthly installments of about $100k. Take a job like an assistant’s position and he’d forfeit the luxury of being paid a couple million for doing nothing.

I liked that video and I like the Howard hire.

I’m just not gonna put too much stock into someone’s likes on Twitter. The fact is, it’s always gonna be a dicey situation when someone interviews for a job and doesn’t get it. I know when my boss left their job in February, I wouldn’t want to work under someone else. Luckily I ended up getting the promotion.

A lot of 2020 recruiting will probably take place before he ever coaches a game, FWIW. So many guys sign early at this point.
