madrid had 5 injuries on defense. having all your injuries in the same position group is brutal. not worried about their future. i think they will be fine.

probably the best way for madrid to play is super negative, counter attack, athletico madrid style and let their midfield and forward lines’ ungodly speed / skill just win a game. Hard to do that against most teams they play, but that’s why they will be CL favorite next year. (It helps that they can rotate a top heavy squad most weeks domestically, but same is true of all teams outside of premier league.)

Just need to get healthy in defense. Signing Rodri to protect the defense and connect would be perfect, although I’m not sure Camavinga will love it.

Anyway, just really unconcerned about the Mbappe - PSG business. Congrats to PSG. They have transformed the mentality and the squad and done something incredibly special. I’m sure most would bet on Real v PSG next year anyway.

Now Dest and Balogun are also out. The last meaningful competition before the World Cup and we are sending a C team.

That match was insane, wow. The Nations League has turned out to be pretty cool.

I am hyped for Cherki next year assuming it gets done. He almost turned that match entirely around today, has just the creativity City has lacked in the box for awhile now.

Wow. Crazy own goal (maybe they will give to Guler) by J Cardozo. One of the only guys I recognize on the field.

Our midfield was once the building block. I know this insnt the first string but they are just not good enough.

And in the time it took to type this out, another turnover in midfield, the ball quickly advanced into US 18, pings crazily a bit, goal. 2-1 Turkey.

Portugal takes down Spain! Didn’t see that coming

Coming away from that match thinking Nuno Mendes is probably the best attacking left back in the World.

Don’t know if this counts as European soccer but the USA is losing to SUI 3-0, make that 4-0 in the first half

I’ve been pretty hard on the “Berhalter was adequate, the talent is overrated” train, but who that played tonight gets any run for the US in the WC? Cardoso and maybe Aaronsen (Brendan)?

Don’t think this means anything. Switzerland’s team is mostly European first teamers and even a 35 Year old Xhaka far outclassed anything we had out there

Pathetic showing. This is the C team, but down 4-0 in the first 35 minutes is brutal.

I don’t really blame Poch so far, no one showing up and off getting a tan somewhere, but we are going to get boat-raced in the WC if we don’t find some way to get some matches in and rallying the troops for friendlies hasn’t worked so far. We really really could use qualifiers this cycle to implement everything.

The GGG truthers out there are feasting tonight.

Club World Cup has been pretty dreadful thus far… but Madrid/Al Hilal was fun as hell.

Anthony Taylor announcing every VAR decision in the “this happened … BUT …” format while broadcast to the whole stadium is hilarious.

That City match was dreadfully boring in the 2nd half.

I’ve caught a little bit, I’m sure I will find a way to get invested by the knockout rounds, but this group stage is doing nothing for me except for the individual player introductions which are hilariously awful and awkward.

The lightning stoppages for the World Cup are not going to go over well.

50 minutes for an isolated storm that got within the delay distance but was moving away from MetLife. It went through Yankee stadium and they played through the rain before having a 8 minute delay.

Uncultured question: do other countries not get lightning or do they just play through it?

Well, I think summer weather in the USA is pretty lightning-heavy, generally speaking. Especially in a lot of places where they end up playing these games.

I’m not sure if there’s some rule interpretation that’s handled differently. My guess is that the rule is messed up because the volume of storms in the US is a bit different than other places.

It’s happens but not as common as here. There was a lightning delay in the Germany/Denmark(?) game at the Euros last summer.

But this is the third straight day with a weather delay (Orlando, Cincinnati, NYNJ).

Yea, it feels like years there’s lightning every summer night even if there’s not an actual storm lol
