As a CMU alum, I assure you there are numerous places to drink heavily, er, enjoy yourself and hang out with friends in Mt Pleasant. I still follow the Chippewas hoops and traditionally the fan base is small but dedicated, which includes a lot of local population. It would certainly help if they find a coach who can, well, coach.
No continuation rule huh? I can count so many times where it should’ve been and one but called off because the refs called it on the floor.
Also, the two steps rule? Are they doing zero gather step like NBA/FIBA rule? I like that rule tbh which would make for a free flowing offense IMO.
Widen lane to 16 ft from 12 (to match NBA courts)
I’m not knowledgeable enough to opine on whether or not widening the lane would be useful in college. Aesthetically I prefer the narrower lane, but rule changes to improve the flow of the game (if that’s what this results in) are good.
Reset team fouls at the 10 minute mark of a half, and make double bonus at 5 team fouls. Would remove the one-and-one.
Give player 6 personal fouls instead of 5, with modifications. These could be:
1. More than 3 fouls in a half is a DQ (not sure if for the half or the game)
2. A player is given 2 fouls in the first half but 4 in the second is a DQ. There are a few more variations listed but these are the two big ones.
In general I feel like the game suffers a bit when a couple of fouls are picked up by key players in the first half. Even with the extra 8 minutes of gametime, the NBA foul count gives some flexibility to work around an early foul or two. So I’m generally ok with increasing the foul count…
But this is kinda weird. There could be some unintended consequences; end of clock situations at the end of the first and second quarters would quickly become hackfests as coaches use players with free fouls (no difference between 0 and 2 at halftime) to disrupt plays when not in bonus situations. I guess I don’t mind a foul reset at halftime, but I reserve the right to change my mind.
Also, one of the few rules I like in college as compared to the NBA is the 1-and-1.
All held ball’s go to the defense.
Indifferent. A held ball is generally a victory for the defense, but there are times where it’s a letdown, and a random one at that. A held ball when down late in the game that goes to the offense is… disappointing.
No more than 2 TO’s for a team in the last 2 minutes of a game/OT.

Eliminate 10 second rule.
Why?
Allow for goaltending/basket interference reviews at any point in the game, but only if the official made a call (ie no calls can’t be reviewed).
No more replays thanks.
Teams can decline FTs in the last two minutes and choose possession of the ball instead.
Interesting idea I’ve seen floated before. I assume this will quench some comebacks. Might also help deal with the foul-up-3 issue. Who knows?
Eliminate offensive basket interference when the ball hits the ream (FIBA rule).
Allow players two steps after lifting pivot foot to make step backs, euro steps, etc. legal (seems like it’s already called this way but not in the rule book).
Eliminate 5 second closely guarded rule (honestly not sure what this is).
Indifferent to all.
There are some really big changes here, which… such things should not be rushed, even when I favor them. Unintended consequences can and will be an issue.
Mount Pleasant isn’t very big, but it’s a Central Michigan town. And people in the area can easily root for both their pick of UM/MSU, and become a fan of CMU as the “local team” that has cheap tickets and accessible games to attend in person. Same with a lot of regional schools, except for EMU.
Of course they aren’t going to address the biggest issue which is the BS open court intentional foul to prevent an easy layup. That needs to be removed from the game.
It looks like the Xavier Simpson step back could be a legal move in the future. Also, this seems to assert that the Eurostep is not a legal move in college basketball at this time. Perhaps this is an effort to standardize that call so some refs don’t whistle it?
Franz hasn’t been called for a travel doing Euro step. I guess the other conference had a problem with it on players getting called for a travel on a Euro step.
a eurostep is not a travel by any travel definition, it’s the same two steps anyone takes on a layup, but in different cadence and direction. Now that doesn’t stop refs from calling it sometimes
I like the timeout proposal (there are too many at the end of games) but the others don’t do much for me.
I don’t like the possession arrow but don’t think jump balls should be automatic turnovers, either. Really, refs just need to figure out how to toss the ball a few feet up in a straight line.
Giving players 6 personals is just an invitation to foul more.
Widening the lane would seem to discourage low post play. If Beilein were still our coach, I’d be fine with that, but with Juwan running the show, that seems like a negative for us.
“It’s a euro!”
Dammit you beat me by 8 minutes. Well done…
I’m still pissed about Dickinson’s textbook euro step at Purdue being called a travel
Edit: from the above two comments looks like I’m not the only one
Immediate eligibility for transfers looks to be officially a thing. This year all students have until July 1st to transfer and be immediately eligible.
feels like a blow to Gonzaga as much as a boon to Arizona
My son sometimes plays on a travel basketball team with this incredible 6th grader that is already, believe it or not, getting some recruiting attention. He just dropped 51 points on the best 7th grade team in the state. That kid has already mastered the Euro but typically we get a couple refs per year that call it a travel. One time our coach said almost the same thing as Juwan and the ref said, “This isn’t the NBA, there’s no such thing as a Euro in amateur hoops.” I was dumbfounded…you get the same number of steps no matter how deliberate you take them.
Yep massive blow to Gonzaga, don’t think it’s hyperbole to say he was the most important/impactful assistant in the country over the last 10years or so
Hopefully Lloyd was the lead in the recruitment on Chet Holmgren and opens the door for Michigan to swoop in!
lol if we promised him the starting PG spot, I think Chet would strongly consider it.
The refs need to examine the rulebook more closely then. I have no idea why refs in college level or below think it’s a travel despite it being two steps which is totally legal.
The only thing that’s different with NBA/FIBA is the zero gather step rule which he’s probably assuming that it’s the case.
