The Arizona 247 board is in a spectacular meltdown right now. The site staff is ripping the AD and president apart and photoshopping them into clown makeup. Not just random posters!

Why are they upset?

They just got played for an extension by Muss, which may have screwed them with their plan A Lloyd, who btw they didn’t want anyway. So now they are firing off panic names like Leonard Hamilton and Dan Majerle.

Feel free to summarize, but is there any insight into waiting so long to let go of Miller? They weren’t postseason eligible, so getting ahead of the coaching carousel seems like it would have been such an obvious move for them…and yet they jumped in late.

Can’t they get Stoudamire anytime they want? I don’t see a reason to panic when he’s pretty much the floor. Better than Majerle by a mile

Fair question but I do not know the AD’s reasoning. Neither does their board. They still love “CSM”

They haven’t mentioned him yet. At least not in the wailing threads.

Imagine if our agony over almost but not quite making the Final Four was the ceiling. That’s the CSM experience.

I don’t know why but I find the whole “C _ _” initialism thing just plain weird.

Does it just stand for Coach Sean Miller?

Asking for a friend, definitely not for me…

I generally associate it with the south. I’ve seen it a lot on Florida boards. Dan Mullen is CDM.

yeah that is correct. Coach Seanathan Miller

I’ve even seen HC blah blah. I think that started with Urban Meyer because they didn’t want to call him CUM

Yes SEC message boards exclusively use the C acronym to refer to their coaches. I’ve seen it from Sparta as well.

Do they call him that verbally, too? Like, if they’re at the Swamp are they like, “Coach Dan Mullen is one heckuva guy!”? Or are they all, “Cee Dee Emm is a swell feller!”?

if it were me I would say See Dee Emm aloud

Apologies in advance, I had to chime in on EMU. People think that it’s just another mid-major, but EMU had to be among the worst open jobs in D1. The roster was so JUCO heavy throughout the Murphy regime that Heath will have to rebuild the program from scratch. Finding a few players in the portal with several years of eligibility that slip through the cracks can help accelerate the build.

The pitch to transfers will likely be the same as to past Jucos: “Hey kid, want to be on the fast track to minutes for a school that’s D1 (technically)?” Lack of familiarity will be a plus, as locals don’t choose Eastern.

Come to think of it, a variation of that same pitch was probably used to recruit former coaches who weren’t familiar with EMU. “Hey coach of tiny school or non-local D1 assistant, want to be the man with the whistle for a school that’s D1 (technically)?”

Hiring a coach to “come home” isn’t new for Eastern. Milton Barnes was more known for fleeing the Clem Haskins scandal at Minnesota, but he was a former EMU assistant. Charles Ramsey was born and raised in Ypsi and was an assistant to EMU icon Ben Braun at Eastern and Cal.

Eastern tried outsiders a few times, too, first with small-school lifer Jim Boone, who won three conference games in his first two seasons. Boone had trouble recruiting, perhaps for his old school ways. Murphy sounded like an exciting choice as a D1 assistant from Syracuse with Detroit roots, but recruiting was abysmal nonetheless and Murphy had to rely almost exclusively to non-local Jucos (long limbs were a plus for that Syracuse zone) who weren’t around long enough to sustain any successes. They weren’t added to any core, they were the core.

Heath doesn’t strike me as an exciting hire, but he’s capable and he seems sincere about his feelings for the school. At the very least, he should know what he is getting himself into. Best of luck, Coach Heath. You’ll need it.

I would argue that Detroit Mercy is among the worst job in D1. Bad location with bad mid-major league which is a shame because they had some great history as a basketball program and had several NBA players playing from there. They’re having a hard time recruiting local talent so they have to rely on transfers to get it done.

Although, they played well at the end of the season so if they can carry that momentum over into the next season, they could win the Horizon behind Antonie Davis. Mike Davis isn’t a bad coach IMO. He got a raw deal at Indiana where he took over a legend and wasn’t ready to coach at a P5 school.
