College Basketball Open Discussion

Well, they did beat Michigan in last season’s conference finale to avoid choking away at least a share of the regular season crown. 0-3 this season, though!

What’s so outstanding about it besides being an alum. Flamed out at his last two head jobs.

Umm the fact that it’s EMU and they hired a guy that’s coaching a GLeague team and also took Arkansas and South Florida to NCAA tournaments. After he left SFla they’ve been atrocious and haven’t come close to where he had them. Got fired from Arkansas basically because he wasn’t Nolan Richardson.

If they’re a B1G team it’s not a great hire, but for EMU? No one with that resume would think about touching that job had he not been an alum

Next season is the 20th Anniversary of his elite 8 run with Kent State. Time to rekindle the MAC magic! Does EMU have the next Antonio Gates flying under the radar on their football team?

I don’t see the reason for excitement

They’re Eastern freaking Michigan and they just hired the GLeague coach of the year!!

Lol they’re not becoming a MAC power now but they literally (Chris Traeger voice) could not have hired anyone more qualified. Or even half as qualified

I’d rather take a flier on Stan Heath 2001 than Stan Heath 2021.

ok well you can’t do that so

I can’t believe EMU didn’t get Brad Stevens. What a failure of a search.

Okay, name a coach with better qualifications than Stan Heath willing to coach at Eastern Michigan.

He was doing pretty well at his current gig:

No chance he would come

That is true. I lean on what he did in college more.

Coincidentally, Antonio Gates Jr (his son) is a senior this year at Dearborn Fordson…and does play basketball. But also he’s a 4* football recruit.

I think a school like EMU has a unique opportunity in the new “free agency” era of college basketball. If you have a good coach that can recruit transfers and figure out how to leverage them year over year…you have a shot. EMU is going to be a tough place to win regardless, but I think transfers are a way to upgrade quickly and build a program.

Forgot about that one🤔

The 2021 version might decide to stay put. He’s 56 and if he’s successful, might just ride it out. I don’t think that’d be true of his younger self.

G-League coach of the year, I might add.

I think we’ve all tried to forget that game. :sob:

Looks like Nova is gonna be good again next year, shocking I know

…or maybe DeAndre didn’t like Turgeon charging toward Juwan.
