What’s nice is that we get some free publicity whenever an ex-NBA guy is hired: “They’re trying to duplicate what Juwan Howard and Michigan have done…”
I think I’d be pretty disappointed if I were UNC fan tonight. Hubert Davis is a cipher.
I don’t know anything about the guy.
So he could be a disaster. Or, he could be fine. How long did he work under Roy? For all we know, the program already had an eye on him as a successor.
The downside here is he’s an unknown. Probably even to the people in the program. The upside is that he brings continuity, and if you didn’t have another slam dunk, a from-within hire is an easier pill to swallow as a fallback than some mid-major coach nobody wants.
Still, UNC is UNC. I think they should have just gotten a bag of $20 million in hundred dollar bills and driven it to center court of the game tonight. Winning coach gets first dibs.
If UNC can’t get Few, can anybody? Maybe Duke? (I don’t think it is a better job, but they might be more desperate, and he may be a little closer to twilight hours. Although the leader for Duke has to be Q Snyder, right? Would he do it?)
Quin Snyder is currently coaching the #1 seed in the Western Conference so hard to see that being a move he’d make if the job opens up anytime soon
Unless you can find a honey hole for Fly Fishing, Few is going nowhere. Besides Zag basketball and family, I have read and heard he spends the next most time on the river.
I don’t think he’s moving either but NC is not devoid of outdoor recreation, including …
I respect a man who just loves to fish. That’s living in the present
So what you are saying is that when Howard eventually leaves for the NBA, Few is a candidate to replace him?

Did they try? They seem more insular than Michigan football and that’s saying something. This is a heck of a stat.
(to be clear, it’s served them better than it has us…hard to argue with their success…)
By the time Howard heads to the NBA, Few will be retired.
Few will finish his years at Alaska Anchorage. No one can compete with their salmon resources.
Make the Great Alaska Shootout Great Again.
Nah, if Few wins tonight, why would he ever leave?
As far as hiring an assistant, Roy Williams was a long-time UNC assistant when Kansas hired him. That worked out pretty well. So was Tom Izzo when MSU hired him.
Yeah, he’s becoming an excellent NBA coach. You don’t leave that position for Duke.
My pet theory is that guys who go straight from playing to coaching (like Juwan) are more likely to succeed than guys who retire as players, don’t do much for awhile, and then decide they want to coach. I think the first group have more fire in the belly - they know coaching is their calling and don’t even want to enjoy the fruits of retirement. The second group has taken it easy for some time and it might not be that easy to get back into the grind. Coaching takes crazy amounts of energy.
Following this, I’d be a little wary of Hubert Davis, because he retired as a player in 2004 and then did cushy TV jobs for years before deciding he wanted to coach. He’s also never been hired as a coach by anyone else other than UNC. We’ll see.
My only surprise is that it took this long for Miles to get another gig…
It’s an awesome job in the sense that it’s in San Jose and they have nearly no history to speak of. California has a ton of in state talent so you don’t have to leave the SW to recruit much. Go .500 and you keep your job for a long time.
Sure beats the heck out of freezing your rear off in Lincoln.

This … is quite a list.
