I wonder what the “autobench” philosophies of those teams were…

Ask and ye shall receive!

From KenPom’s 2-Foul Participation Stats: (% of time a starter w/ 2 fouls played in the first half)

  • 2019 Michigan: 1.4% / 345 of 353
  • 2015 Wisconsin: 3.2% / 337 of 351
  • 2018 Duke: 41.5% / 20 of 351
  • 2018 Xavier: 25.4% / 101 of 351
  • 2018 Purdue: 22.7% / 128 of 351
  • 2018 Creighton: 9.9% / 257 of 351
  • 2016 Utah: 11.9% / 246 of 351
  • 2011 Ohio State: 14.9% / 240 of 345

So basically last year’s Duke team never had to worry about foul trouble.

Well, it means that Coach K had very few qualms about playing a starter in the first half after they picked up their second foul.

Right, I was combining both stats. They had among the lowest foul rates in the deacde and he played his starters even with 2 fouls, thus the conclusion that they hardly ever dealt with a player missing time due to foul trouble.

I guess KenPom doesn’t have stats for 4 foul participation rate though,

Oh yeah…duh. I totally knew what you were saying.

(I’m tired.)

Thanks for your efforts! Tending towards autobench but maybe not as much as you’d think.

Here are Michigan’s 2-Foul Participation figures under Beilein:

  • 2019: 1.4%, 345/353
  • 2018: 0.6%, 351/351
  • 2017: 8.8%, 279/351
  • 2016: 3.8%, 323/351
  • 2015: 7.4%, 291/351
  • 2014: 1.1%, 347/351
  • 2013: 1.1%, 347/347
  • 2012: 5.6%, 319/345
  • 2011: 4.2%, 337/345
  • 2010: 15.8%, 210/347

IIRC, that “spike” in 2017 was Beilein letting Walton and Irvin play a bit with 2 fouls.

Makes sense because at that point they were the two best players on the roster and Beilein needed them to play heavy minutes, two fouls or not.

And they didn’t really have backups. As Underwood said last night, it was crazy that Simpson even played two minutes in the Oklahoma State tourney game

Someone tell Carolina that their game against Louisville is already 3/4 of the way over.

early in the game but fsu turns the ball over to much to beat duke

Yep. It doesn’t look like they have the firepower to stay in this one.

I do have a soft spot for Leonard Hamilton though. The way he let the worst free throw shooting team left in the tournament dribble out the last 10 seconds of the regional final only up 4 last year was special.

I think that was a case where the coach told his team ‘don’t foul Duncan Robinson’ and they listened.

FSU with a nice half, up 39-38.
