This article takes the POV I took above: schools are scheduling games for max financial advantage, while the players receive no pay and have no say. I’m far from happy at the creeping commercialization of college sports, but to pretend that the players are not workers. . . just not logical. I’ve seen posters insist this isn’t true because student-athletes obtain lots of perks, but so do lots of workers. Different professions have differing status and compensation:
Should kids who play at Alma or Michigan Tech be employees too? If so, who pays them since they cost their schools more money than they make?
Kentucky 16-2 run in 8 minutes to cut lead to 6. ND didn’t get a FG for 12 minutes
I think what they need most is to unionize. Whether they get paid or not, that’s how they get a say in how they are used.
There are literally jobs (internships) you can get as a normal person that pay you nothing. Removing NCAA rules on paying players doesn’t make D-2 sports non-functional.
They’re already being paid. Obviously they should be paid less because they aren’t nearly as valuable.
Crazy epic Notre Dame meltdown in the making, Kentucky down 4.
edit: Now down 9. Every time I type something, the opposite starts happening.
Ok, so some schools will pay players and most won’t. So who is allowed to pay them? Is there a fixed amount each school can spend? Is it like MLB where a handful of teams have unlimited resources and they compete against small-market schools?
Yep. That’s already what happens now except it is obfuscated and hidden under the table and Michigan doesn’t benefit from their wealth as much as they should.
There is already inequality in resources between big time schools and smaller schools. Why is it only an issue when it comes to the student athletes being paid?
Kentucky within 3, 1:30 left. Never would’ve guessed this game would end up being fun to watch.
Holy cow this game! One point, 1 minutes left. Turn on CBS.
Inequity doesn’t mean impossibility. Gonzaga is the #1 team in the country. They don’t have Kentucky’s boosters to pay players. They can compete in the current system. Same for Butler and Creighton.
If you ditch the NCAA model and turn CBB into a sorry version of the NBA you’ll loose a lot of what makes it appealing.
Only if you are living in a different reality.
What makes you think the Michigan athletic department is going to start getting into bidding wars with Duke and Kentucky? We’re not going to do that. Hell, we can’t get JUCO players past our admissions department, what makes you think Warde is going to start signing off on six figure offers to 5 star prospects?
If your primary concern is our ability to recruit and win in a corrupt system, JB’s Final Fours and Juwan’s #1 recruiting class are evidence that we’re doing just fine.
Kentucky has a shot to win with the ball down 1 and 11 seconds left. I still hope they don’t, but I wouldn’t totally mind it after that crazy comeback.
Purdue’s Miami meltdown looks even worse now. Miami falls at home to Florida Gulf Coast.
RIP the comeback. We’ll see if Kentucky uses a very good half to turn their season around or just collapses into themselves like a dying star at 1-4.
Some early results and goings on:
Toledo beat UMKC (Head Coach Bill Donlon) by 7 at home.
FGCU upset Miami at Miami.
USF beat Woodford at home by 2.
Kentucky almost pulled off a 24 point comeback at home to beat ND.
#12 Tennessee is down by 2 at home vs a DDJ lead Cinci with 6 left.
Is that Tennessee game on TV?
