True but he is still impossibly young somehow. 45 years old and he got his first head coaching gig in 2002? He was 27 years old?
What about Chris Collins? Quite the coaching tree there
Don’t forget Wojo. The list of elite Coach K alumni goes on and on
They wouldn’t promote Nate James right? Duke would be an enormous job for a first-time HC…
Other than Roy Williams and Izzo have “coaching tree hires” ever worked?
Even calling Roy - who had won 9 B12 titles and gone to 4 FF’s when NC hired him is a stretch here - he was by far the best person they could have hired.
hey Matt Doherty won AP Coach of the Year in 2001!
Wait this joke doesn’t even make sense
SDSU won btw. 80-68
Speaking of coaching trees working.
Good start for Dutcher.
I think Duke is going to hire someone outside the family.
I guess it depends on how far back you view coaching trees. Roy Williams was part of the Dean Smith coaching tree, as was Larry Brown. Probably one of the best coaching trees was Eddie Sutton out of that tree you had Self/Keady/Hamilton/Pelphrey/Jankovic. Rick Pitino also has a large coaching tree that is so large I don’t know where to start.
Does Matt Painter count?
I mean hiring a former assistant of the departing coach
Brad Stevens worked out
Greg Gard worked out
I’ve been pretty anti-Greg Gard though last year was super impressive. But I would say its a little too soon to say he has worked out.
Gard had one poor year out of 5 and won a big ten title, I’d say it’s worked out
Has he been the head guy for 5 years now? Yikes…didn’t realize its been that long. I do think Wisconsin will be in for a decline as Bennett/Ryan had them basically at their historical apex. My opinion was that it would be a sharper decline than it has been so that is a credit to Gard. He rebounded from losing Ethan Happ, but we will see what happens when all these seniors leave (either this year or next!) and what the next generation of Wisconsin basketball looks like.
I’m sorry I can’t help myself, but he might have benefited from losing Ethan Happ. Or maybe it’s a knock on Gard for allowing himself to be so dependent on a guy who can’t shoot.
Along similar lines. Ain’t nobody crying the blues over Teske and Simpson moving along. Great careers but 4 years was plenty. Felt like M was treading water last year.
Thad Matta at Xavier.
Sean Miller at Xavier.
Chris mack at Xavier.
Travis Steele at Xavier.
Todd lockliter at butler.
IDK, the world is so different and I feel like their careers were cut short. No ones crying the blues but those kids were winners. I mean BIG time winners, the kids we have today probably won’t stay 4 years but will they put up the W’s? Recruiting is great but IMO it has to lead to championships. Losing is not an option at Michigan!
