I went to an Alabama at Kentucky basketball game last year and saw him play in person
UConn has come down to earth with a thud, losing 4 of its last 5 games, all conference games, after a torrid start to the season with a bunch of top 25 wins.
Yep about three blocks long mostly all bars and restaurants, plus its basically on campus. Only about a quarter mile from Bryant Denny Stadium. Been there many times. My son graduated from Bama.
They did have a rough start to the conference slate in part because they played a four game stretch with three road games at the other 4 decent teams in conference (Xavier, Marquette, Providence)
But the home loss to St Johns is a bad one.
They have 1 more road game against a tournament quality team left (Creighton), so I’d think they start winning again soon.
Georgetown last won a Big East regular season game on March 2nd, 2021. Since that date, they are on a 27-game league skid (not counting the four wins they attained in the 2021 Big East Tournament).
With just under 8:00 left, they lead Nova by three in Philly.
Georgetown have any wings we could pursue via the portal this offseason? Feels like a school with a lot of potential turnover coming.
Brandon Murray could be good but not sure if he’s a fit in other ways based on nothing but his prior school choices. He did play at IMG with Jett tho
I thought Donald Carey from last year’s team could be a good bench shooter, but he’s currently stinking it up at Maryland so clearly I know nothing.
Hard to get excited about guys who are engrained in a losing basketball program. It isn’t always a dead end but it definitely has to factor into the evaluation.
Their roster has also basically turned over every year
Yeah, Murray is the only interesting guy on their roster, but as you say, his time at LSU with Will Wade and then following Nickelberry to Georgetown doesn’t exactly scream “Michigan” to me.
It’s hard to balance. Chaundee and Mike Smith came from atrocious programs. The worst in their respective conferences. So I don’t really think you should discount players on bad programs personally. They could be exactly the ones that need a new spot. At the same time, some players might just be ruined by bad coaching and/or just not winning players themselves
True! For some reason, I still have faith in Akok and Murray but you are right for the most part.
Sure, I agree with this but there has to be a path forward and you have to have some winning habits as a player. It’s easy to see a guy who averages 15/night but someone has to score on the basketball court and that gets lost sometimes.
Probably very little reason for this, but a backcourt of Akok and Reed would really excite me, if Hunter leaves.
Aaaaand 28 straight league loses for GT.
Georgia Tech? I liked them back in the early-90’s.
EDIT: I see that you meant Georgetown. That may be a more surprising drop-off.
And now I’ve found out that Gheorghe Muresan’s son, Victor, plays (or hardly plays) for Georgetown.
I liked his dad, though he was a bit of a dick to me the one time I waited on him.
We all had Clemson leading the ACC by two games a third of the way through league play, right?
Think this is a really interesting point regarding the portal. Low majors scooping up good D2 players is a huge untapped market:
Everyone is going to focus on tapping up mid-major guys to HM leagues, but there are other ways for guys to find their level.
After Duncan I was always wondering about finding a moneyball way to target the couple of lower level guys that might help a team.
I talked to a parent who’s son is being recruited for college baseball and who has a lot of connections. He said it is crazy right now at the D1 and D2 level, even the lowest tier. Every spot is basically being re-recruited in the portal. They said that there are D1 guys left without a spot when the music stops who take a year at a lower level or even JUCO and then play the portal again the next year.
