yeah Drew is my serious answer

Of that list, makes sense that they’d knock on Drew’s door first? Although IMO when you’re a blueblood you always have to make Few say no. Which he probably will, but you do it anyways just in case, at least until a few years from now when he’s in his mid-60s.

I would be shocked if they promote a midmajor guy. That job is arguably the pinnacle of the sport. Although I guess Cronin to UCLA was technically midmajor…

I guess but Duke and UNC both promoted in house with coaches that have never been a head coach before. Kentucky took Cal from Memphis, although once again not exactly the same. I don’t think it’s a non-starter if the right guy is there/they get enough no’s like UCLA did.

Lloyd is an interesting one. Does anyone have a deep enough understanding of how Arizona was able to so greatly surpass expectations this year to opine on his role? How much credit does Lloyd get vs. things just coming together?

So not Kevin Willard?

Danny or Eli Manning, or John Gruden.

Think bigger.

I’m a La Salle alum. His name is being discussed on the message board, fan base is somewhat divided on accepting him. La Salle just hired a new president and the current AD did not hire Ashley Howard. La Salle just announced an arena renovation, but money is tight at the school overall. Phil Martelli would bring some juice to La Salle and the Big 5. I assume he’d like to be back in Philadelphia if he could but I’m not sure how he feels about coaching against St. Joe’s. He definitely has bad feelings toward the St. Joe’s admin, but I’m not sure he would take it even if offered because ultimately the majority of the St. Joe’s fanbase still likes him. La Salle is a very tough job and Martelli would not be my first choice but I’d have him somewhere on my list because he could help raise money the school will need to do the arena renovation (they have to start by 2023 due to a creative will donation). Sorry more than you probably needed to know and yet doesn’t really answer the question.

Interesting though, the dynamic.

UCLA got lucky with how they landed Cronin after multiple candidates saying no to them. Cronin can coach his ass off. Sometimes, it’s better to be lucky in this case.

also his “fit” was no guarantee although I understand the existence of fit is a matter of considerable debate. it has worked out better than a lot of people expected in any case.

The bigger thing I see is Kissinger he was one of the officials in the Baylor-UNC game on Saturday.

I didn’t think Cronin was necessarily a bad fit at the time. The last time UCLA had success was with Ben Howland who was more defensive minded.

A ref named Kissinger? Perfect.

Oh…my…I…am…so…surprised (said in monotone)

The idea Penny is a booster because he donated 1 mil 13 years ago because he went to the school and now coach is ridiculous.

Late to the conversation, but without knowing all the behind the scenes college administration politics I think their first and second call goes to Drew and it’s equally what he brings and what the others that some here have mentioned lack.

  • Drew - Won a national championship at Baylor after bringing the program back from a horrendous scandal. Probably seen as somewhat more above the seedy underside of college basketball as most. (But who really knows about this stuff.)

  • Few - The balance of Gonzaga’s reputation and track record as a year-in and year-out national contender who gets players to come to Spokane and off to the NBA vs. the pressure cooker of a blue-blood in a tough basketball conference. He’s 60. Think he stays.

  • Musselmann - Intriguing. 57 (Older than I thought) but 60ish(?) when Self leaves. Had a great run to Elite Eight twice. Yeah, maybe if everybody else says no.

  • Oats - I know many folks around here were bummed he had already taken the Alabama position when Beilein went to the Cavs, but does anybody else see him as a little gimmicky? Is his entire coaching philosophy dunks-and-3’s? Also, (and not that Kansas would view this as a smirch against his reputation) does anyone else look at any SEC coach and think to themselves “slimy”.

  • Wright - Seems like he’s an east coast guy through and through but if your Kansas you have to give him a call. I would imagine that the Villanova administration would do everything in their power to keep him, and why not? He is Villanova. Already 61.

  • Don’t know enough about Lloyd. Underwood would be hilarious. Let’s see what Holloway does at Seton Hall.
