College Basketball 2021-22 Open Discussion

Which remains a crazy part of how the NCAA works (especially when the player in question wasn’t even playing.). At the same time, super dumb by McGary to do it in the first place.

Hate takes like this about ncaa sanctions, every player and coach there knew there was this potential and still elected to coach there and play there.

Yeah I mean this has been hanging over their head for like 4 years. I feel like it was conventional wisdom it would happen this year since they basically got by last year on pure NCAA legislative hang ups

Yep NCAA was in no hurry last year when they had Cade. It was obviously going to happen when he was gone.

This has been going on for a long time. A significant part of the penalties schools pay is often the recruiting hit while NCAA sanctions are looming, knowing they could come at any time. We certainly saw that here. It somewhat justifies the turtle speed the NCAA moves with. Take that away only when the penalty process speeds up by a lot.

I agree the biggest punishment the ncaa gives is the looming threat and the harm that can do to recruiting . Taking away 2 scholarships, one year post season bans etc do very little to hurt programs. Truth is um basketball tanked because of ellerbe, missing on pitino, and letting the facilities erode away not because the post season ban or scholarship restrictions.

Almost as bad as “you can’t punish the kids there now for what happened 5 years ago!”

Sure, cheat as much as you want, just be sure to cover it up for a year or two after the coach/players leave and voila.

So funny to watch these ASU guards have to relearn how to play basketball. Can’t believe one of them didn’t end up LSU.

I was gunna write “That’s because their strong-ass offers don’t included being able to chuck up shots whenever”, but I think I just saw Cam Thomas throw one up from the bdubs bar I’m at.

You should go read BQ’s Memphis article.

This quote by Penny is messing with my brain:

“Emoni came in to be the point guard,” Hardaway says. “But Alex Lomax was already the point. And Landers Nolley was the leading scorer on the team, but Emoni came here to do that. So (Bates) has to come in and make friends with guys that he’s probably about to take their jobs, kind of. Sometimes that doesn’t go well, and Emoni has to understand that sometimes people aren’t ready to relinquish their title to you. Scott Skiles wasn’t ready to step aside for me (in Orlando), so the franchise said, OK, we gotta trade him. And that’s when everything fell in line. It’s the same thing for him. It’s the same thing for Jalen. The guys aren’t going to be all hunky-dory, like, ‘Here ya go, Emoni, just take it!’ He has to know that and not take anything personally.”

That’s candid, and all true. But he does realize he can’t trade Alex Lomax right?

What could possibly go wrong?

Penny’s going to encourage him to follow the FedEx NIL money trail all the way to the transfer portal.

Sounds like a brotherhood and a great recipe for team chemistry. :smirk:

Sounds like he’s saying Emoni just wants the job to be handed to him without merit.

…or that Penny sold Bates a bill of goods, got him on campus and surprised him with the presence of an existing roster of players.

How should Alex Lomax take that statement? It sure sounds like his coach doesn’t want him even if he plays well.

An Inside Look at Bates University with Coach Penny:

“Welcome back to our practice facility, Emoni. Can’t wait to start the season. Oh hey, wow, where’d this guy come from? He’s a point guard? And he was on the team last year? Are you sure? That’s crazy! My bad, Emoni. I had no idea, really.”

“Whoa, there’s another guy with the same practice uniform on as that first guy. I know, for real! He looks like he can really score the basketball, too. You’re not gonna believe this, but they’re telling me that–hold up–that he was on the team last year, too! That’s wild! Can’t believe he didn’t get traded away in the offseason like we did with Skiles. Oh well, I’m sure these teammates are gonna love learning our new all-iso game plan with the ball in your hands, Emoni.”

Then why not say this instead of rambling on like an idiot for 5 minutes?

This while entire paragraph makes little to no sense and basically insults his current players as well as making it sound like he can trade or move people current players off the team.

Agreed. Also very glad this is not my problem.
