I mean, I don’t think Cronin was a good fit and I don’t think he lasts long there, but this is his first year and you don’t fire a coach in the first couple years. You need to give them some time to get their players in there and develop a program.
I sort of assume he just retires? He was obviously frustrated with college ball.
As long as he’s not at Indiana, I’m fine with wherever (if anywhere) he decides to coach. Don’t see him leaving for Texas or UCLA, but Indiana would sting.
I definitely assumed he would retire when he stopped coaching the Cavs, but I also didn’t think he’d be there less than a year. Not sure that’s how he wants to go out as a coach.
Two thoughts:
-
I would assume that quitting mid season means he wants another college job. Otherwise he might as well stick it out another couple months.
-
I can’t see him leaving the midwest. I believe the family still all lives in Ann Arbor. I believe being close to Ann Arbor is an important criteria.
I think he should be a special international consultant for Juwan to specifically find more Wagners of college age.
My assumption is that if he doesn’t return post-break it’s not entirely because the choice is entirely in his hands.
It was an important criteria for his NBA job. I don’t think you can assume he wants to be as close to Ann Arbor as possible for a college gig. That would mean his possible opportunities are Big Ten, MAC, or below. Plus IU is still double the drive of Cleveland to AA.
Good luck to JB, great coach and an even better man! If he coach’s agin in college I think it will be at a school where basketball is the number one sport, perhaps in the ACC and located near a large city. Wake Forest is a guess…
Does he really want to recruit? I don’t think so, it was the most distasteful part for him.
There’s an alternate realty where we are 10-15 with Ed Cooley as head coach and we’re all on here discussing the odds of firing Cooley so Beilein can come back.
What is the payout if they can him now? I feel bad for John, but it is what it is. I don’t see how that organization pulls out of this nose dive any time soon, regardless of who the coach is.
I think he’s at an age where it’s time to start winding things down rather than ramping them up. Let the young guys sweat that grind. He’s got enough money to buy one of those adult mobility scooters and a few zany Hawaiian shirts. Scoot around for a while and enough with the damn ball.
(shiver) I like reality reality a LOT better.
I think the best thing for his health would probably be retirement–enjoy the fat buy out, but if he comes back to college, it won’t be for a rebuild. He’ll be chasing that natty…
List of best coaches to never win it all? JB has to be on it, no?
I agree that he may not want to come back to the NCAA, and that proximity to A2 is important for family reasons. Could easily see retirement being the choice, but who knows?
what’s it say?
I’m surprised no one has mentioned the last challenge for Beilein to tackle, being an assistant coach. I could see him in a role like Phil Martelli’s. There wouldn’t be the long term commitment expected of a head coach and no real concerns about his age.
Makes note of retirement as a possible option and lists Texas, Boston College, and Depaul as places that could have openings. Also says that jobs could open as fallout from FBI/NCAA related issues. Nothing really of major importance.
